NYCHA Theater Program Subject: IMPROV Workshops
1. Topic-
INTRO to IMPROV
Today: TRUST

2. Content-
1. What's IMPROV?
2. Trust.

3. Goals: Aims/Outcomes-
1. Get to know each other.
2. Define IMPROV.
3.Build trust within the group.

4. Objectives-
1. Everyone knows everyone else's name.
2. Everyone can define IMPROV in their own words and they know that trust is key when improvising.

5. Procedures/Methods-

A. Introduction-

1. "Hello, my name is...":

Everyone stands in a circle. The teacher has an object that will be thrown around the circle. The person holding the object has to say their name out loud to everyone else. We do this for a while, until everyone has said their name at least twice.

2. NAME GAME:

Circle, one person in the middle. The person in the middle (A) goes to someone else (B) and says:
YOU - B has to say his or her name.
ME - B has to say A's name
RIGHT - B has to say the name of the person to his/her right.
LEFT - B has to say the name of the person to his/her left.
NICE TO MEET YOU - A and B run around the circle and the last one to get back goes to the middle.

B. Development-

What's IMPROV?

Everyone gets a turn to say what they think or know about IMPROV.

Possible answers:

Getting on-stage and performing without any preparation or planning, without a script... Making it up as you go along.

All of us are expert improvisers: We all go through life everyday without a script, responding to our environment.

***There are a few elements that are key to successfully improvising in groups/teams. Listening and observing each other, no blocking, accepting ideas (“yes and…”), helping each other and trust. Today we are going to talk about trust.

C. Practice-

Trust games:

1. THE KNOT: Circle and holding hands. Everyone starts going over and under the held hands until the group is a big knot. Then back to the original circle without letting go of the hands.

2. LOST IN SPACE: Everyone starts walking throughout the space with their eyes open. After a while everyone closes their eyes and they keep walking trying not to collide with each other. The teacher starts talking so that the students follow the voice, if they collide with someone else they have to keep moving without separating until everyone finishes up together.

3. TOUCH 5!: The group is divided into pairs. One person in each pair closes his/her eyes. The other takes him/her around the room and makes him/her touch 5 different textures from objects. The person that had his/her eyes closed has to guess what objects he/she touched. They change places.

4. Cars!: Pairs. One is the chauffeur the other the car. The car has his/her eyes closed. The chauffeur drives touching the car's back: one finger in the center of the back is forward, a finger in the left or right shoulder means go left or right, drawing circles with the finger in the center of the back is reverse and no touching is stop. No accidents with other cars please! They trade places after a while.

5. Did you call me?: Pairs. One has his/her eyes closed the other calls the him/her by name and they move around the room. Trade places.

D. Closure-

Before leaving everyone gets back in a circle and one (or more) tries to say all of the names. And one (or more) defines IMPROV.
