Art History: Lascaux Cave Paintings

Vocabulary: painting, line, shape, texture, color, value Techniques: texture rubbing, drawing and painting with nontraditional materials
 
3. Goals: Aims/Outcomes-
I can/will:
1. "read" a picture created long ago.
2.I can find lines, shapes, textures, and colors in the picture.
3.I will make my own original cave painting.
4. I will talk to my friends and my teacher about my art.
5. I will, with the help of my teacher, write a fill in the blank sentence about a friend's art and my own.

5. Materials and Aids-
images of cave paintings
brown or gray construction paper
brown, black and yellow crayons
brown, black, yellow, and red(mixed with yellow to tone) paint
various twigs for making "paintbrushes"
water and paper towels
 
6. Procedures/Methods-

A. Introduction-

1.Project cave images.
2.Ask what do you see. Let students tell what they see. When they infer, ask them what they see that makes them do so.
3. I wonder... Let students wonder about the painting
4. Review line, shape, texture, color. Point out examples. Let students point out examples.
5. Share the history of the paintings.
6. Tell students they will make their own.
 

B. Development-

1. Show them how to rub textures using the brown, yellow, and black crayons. Remind them that light and dark are values.
2.Show them how to dip the twigs in paint and use lines to create their drawings.
3. While they work, model how to talk about art with peers.
4. After they finish, model how to complete the sentences.
 

C. Practice-

1. Students will rub the textures onto their paper using a rough wall or table top.
2. Students will begin painting their figures.
 

D. Independent Practice-

1. Students will continue working on their paintings until time for clean up.
 

E. Accommodations (Differentiated Instruction)-

1. Adjust the size of their "brush" if holding is an issue.
2. Allow the use of drawing with crayons if using the twig and the paint is not an option.
 

F. Checking for understanding-

1. Student will write a one sentence self assessment and a one sentence peer assessment by filling in the blanks: I like_____ about my art because it _________. I like _____ about _____'s art because it _________.
2. The teacher will review all pieces as they are complete to monitor progress over time.
 

G. Closure-

1. Sharing and talking about the finished artwork.
2. Cleaning the work space.
