1. Topic-
Balance
 
2. Content-
Balance (Symmetrical, Approximate Symmetry, Asymmetrical and Radial), Surrealism, Collage, Value, Shading, Blending, Hatching, Cross-Hatching, Pointillism, Scribbling
 
4. Objectives-
Learning Objective: To describe, identify and demonstrate the four types of balance using collage and/or drawing using the concept of Surrealism.

Language Objective: Students will listen to the lecture on balance, answer their journal questions on the subject and use their knowledge of balance to create a collage and/or a drawing using balance.
 
5. Materials and Aids-
Either 9" x 12" or 12" x 18" drawing paper, magazines, scissors, glue, pencils, erasers
 
6. Procedures/Methods-

A. Introduction-

1. Teacher reviews balance with students via journal questions, a PowerPoint, and various artworks to show the various types of balance.


2. Teacher will hand out worksheet on balance.

3. Students will complete the balance worksheet.
 

B. Development-

1. Teacher will reinforce the types of balance through a series of visuals.

2. Teacher will discuss
the parameters of the three-part assignment.

Students will chose between each type of balance (Symmetrical or Approximate Symmetry, Asymmetrical, and Radial) to create three different art projects. One project must be a drawing, another project must be in the form of a collage and the final project must be a combination of both drawing and a collage. Each project must utilize a type of balance and Surrealism (Fantasy/Reality).
 

C. Practice-

1. Students will create a rough draft/brainstorm for each of the three projects. (Approximately 2 days)

2. Each rough draft/brainstorm must be approved by the teacher before a student can move on.
 

D. Independent Practice-

1. Students will begin their projects on either 9" x 12" paper, or 12" x 18' paper.
 

F. Checking for understanding-

Teacher will use daily observations and check ins with each student to guide students in their understanding.

Students will be graded using the Fine Arts Department Art Rubric.
 

G. Closure-

Each student will need to write a 150 word artist statement to accompany their work.
