I can talk with others about traditional Japanese dress and how opening to the Western World influenced modern dress. (1890-WWI Era)
I will create a Japanese figure, from a recycled paper towel roll, who wears a traditional kimono.
I will use repetition to create Japanese style patterns on drawing paper.
I will read a clothing pattern and use it to cut out the kimono.
I will differentiate between the two meanings of the word pattern.
I will use origami folding techniques to assemble to kimono.
My sculpture will stand on its own because it has balance
I will talk to my peers and my teacher about my artwork.
I will write a short paragraph, introduction, three-five details, and a conclusion, about my work and about a peer's work.

6. Procedures/Methods-

A. Introduction-

1.Project examples of Japanese Kimonos
2.Ask, "What do you see?" Let students tell what they see. When they infer ask, "What do you see that makes you say that?" Once discussion wans, go to I wonder... Let students wonder about the samples until conversation slows down.
3.Lead into a discussion about the word traditional. Use a Frayer model to illustrate this word. Explain that origami is a traditional Japanese art that is used in modern times by people all over the world.
4. Explain how opening their country to the USA influenced Japanese traditional culture. Let kids lead a discussion on the following question: Does global media(Internet) create an opportunity for cultural sharing? (Socratic method).
6.Ask students what they know about recycling. Tell them how artists recycle materials. Ask them to give examples of how materials can be recycled to create art.
7. Tell them they are going to create a figure sculpture using a paper towel that shows traditional Japanese dress. Tell them they will design their own patterns for the fabrics.
 

B. Development-

1.After students finish creating their patterns, distribute directions.
2.Read them with the students. Show them how to create the head and face.
3. Distribute patterns. Explain the purposes of dotted and folded lines. Demonstrate cutting using plain paper. Demonstrate folding using plain paper.
 

C. Practice-

1.Guide students to fold and stuff napkins to create the head. Show them how to draw the face. Put sculpture away until they practice cutting and assembling the clothing.
2.Guide students as they trace and cut their pieces using plain paper for practice.
3.Guide students as they fold their pieces using plain paper.
 

D. Independent Practice-

1.Students will use their patterns to cut and fold the kimono.
2.Students will Assemble the kimono to finish their sculpture.
 

E. Accommodations (Differentiated Instruction)-

1.Provide specialized cutting equipment if needed.
2.Cut, fold, and glue for those whose motor skills prevent them from making precise cuts.
Allow student to do a figure drawing that shows a patterned kimono.

 

F. Checking for understanding-

1.Students will write a paragraph self assessment and a paragraph for peer assessment. They should use some of the following: line, shape, form, color, pattern, repetition, balance, texture in their writings.
2.The teacher will review all pieces as they are completed to monitor progress over time.
 

G. Closure-

1.Sharing and talking about the finished artwork.
2.Cleaning the space.
