Valuing Culture Through Art.
 
2. Content-
How is culture expressed through art? Culture is a particular society or time and places.How does art reflect the artist? Vocabulary: culture,society, individuality.
 
3. Goals: Aims/Outcomes-
1.VA.4.C.3.3 Use the art-making process, analysis, and discussion to identify the connections between art and other disciplines.
2.VA.4.S.1.3 Create artworks that integrate ideas from culture or history.
3.VA.4.H.1.1 Identify historical and cultural influences that have inspired artists to produce works of art.
4.VA.4.S.1.1 Manipulate tools and materials to achieve diverse effects in personal works of art.

e.g., charcoal, colored pencil, block printing: reduction, stencil
 
4. Objectives-
1.The students will be able to identify cultural influences and characteristics in art
2.Students will be able to create a work of art drawing upon their own cultural and ethnic backgrounds.
 
5. Materials and Aids-
Paper. Color pencil/crayons. Lithograph by Jules Cheret, Les Tziganes (The Gypsies) 1888.
 
6. Procedures/Methods-

A. Introduction-

1.The teacher will write "What is culture?" on the board and have the students discuss in groups what they think or know about culture.
2. Each group will take turns telling the class what ideas they came up with.Teacher will write on the board.
3.The teacher will then introduce culture as another aspect that greatly influences how and what artist create.
 

B. Development-

1.Teacher will show work of art, elaborate and ask reflective questions.
2.The students will write some influences and characteristics they found in the art from the culture group portrayed.
 

C. Practice-

1. Students will be asked to write about what they are proud of and what has influenced them from their cultural background.
2. Teacher will emphasize to the students how art can be a way to honor and express a persons cultural and ethnic background.
 

D. Accommodations (Differentiated Instruction)-

1.Students will work in groups with different levels of skills, therefore they can help each other in the process.
2.Teacher will write down the main points discussed by each group so that students can look back on it as well as have a visual cue.
3.Vocabulary words will be written down on a poster board.
 

E. Checking for understanding-

1.Teacher will listen to student's group discussions.
2.The Teacher will also read the student's journal entries.
3.Teacher will check art work created and make sure students are on task.
 

G. Closure-

1.students will look at all of the different portraits made by their peers and discuss the cultural influences represented in the class.
2.Discuss how culture has influenced art.
