1. Topic-
"Puppet Creation" AKA "Paper Bag Puppets"

2. Content-
Incorporation of all previous lessons, especially the immediate past lesson on mosaics. Vocabulary includes: ventriloquism, puppetry, muppet, ventriloquial figure.

3. Goals: Aims/Outcomes-
To create a unique and creative hand puppet made from a paper bag, scrap materials, and various art supplies.

To understand the purpose of puppetry for both entertainment and education.

4. Objectives-
Students will understand how to use scrap materials to create a work of art.

Students will understand the purpose of creating puppets as an art form to entertain an audience and get a message across to a variety of people.

Students will realize a variety of careers involved with puppetry, entertainment, and art.

5. Materials and Aids-
The materials included in this lesson are: Paper bags, scissors, glue, markers, crayons, colored pencils, construction paper, pencils, and various scrap materials. Teacher resources will include: video of famous puppeteers, toy puppets, and professional soft puppets used for entertainment.

6. Procedures/Methods-

A. Introduction-

The lesson will begin with a brief description of what a puppeteer does and what a ventriloquist does. It will also describe the difference between the two. A brief video will be shown as to how puppeteers work their craft and how a ventriloquist performs. I will then begin to explain what the students will be creating by utilizing one of my character puppets and by using ventriloquism to make it appear that the puppet is interacting with me and the students.

B. Development-

Students will then be given the directions as to how to create their puppets. I will use a sample puppet created by a former student as a demonstration piece. The supplies and process will then be explained prior to the students implementing the process.

C. Practice-

With the remaining time, the students will begin the creation of their puppets. They will create their puppet in any form they wish. Any extra supplies that the students desire, will be made available to them. The lesson will continue for several weeks or until the students complete their puppet creation.

D. Independent Practice-

As the students work on their project puppet, I will circulate the classroom observing their progress and offering any assistance that the students may need.

E. Accommodations (Differentiated Instruction)-

Students with special needs will be given over sized crayons for easy handling, enlarged scissors for better manipulation, and any other tools that will make the work for them more manageable.

F. Checking for understanding-

After the description of the lesson is complete, I will have the students demonstrate to me their level of comprehension by assessing themselves. They will be using the "Time On Task, Task On Target" system. They will show their level of understanding by holding up the number of fingers that explain what they feel they have mastered. This form of Marzano's level of understanding will give a good description of the students' levels of understanding.

G. Closure-

Since this lesson will take several weeks to complete, the closure will begin with cleaning up their work space and then a brief review of what and why they are creating the art that they are creating. The students will then line up for dismissal to their classroom teacher.

7. Evaluation-
By focusing in on the students' reaction to the "Time On Task, Task On Target" responses, I will have a strong understanding as to how much knowledge the students have absorbed for this particular lesson. Also, by circulating the room and observing the procedures of the students, I will be able to tell whether the students grasped all the concepts of the lesson.

8. Teacher Reflection-
After viewing the students' work, I will be able to assess myself as to how simple or difficult the lesson was for that particular level of student comprehension. I will then be able to adjust my lessons to make them more simple or challenging, depending on how the students worked during the class.
