4. Objectives-

2. Students will review concepts previously learned in first painting unit
3. "When you write something in class, do you just write it and you're done?" (Students respond) "Well, art is like that too. Artists plan their work, just like writers plan before publishing a book and builders plan before they start nailing together wood."

B. Development-

1. Explain that we're going to start by drawing from observation
2. "What do you think observation means?" (Students respond. Clarify as needed)
3. Model for students how to draw by breaking animals into big shapes first and then little shapes

C. Practice-

Repeat the lesson.

D. Independent Practice-

1. Students pass out sketchbooks, pencils, and non-fiction books
2. Each student draws at least 3 different types of animals from observation (using the non-fiction picture book) in their sketchbook
3. Students switch books when needed to access pictures of different types of animals

E. Accommodations (Differentiated Instruction)-

1. One-on-one teacher help
2. Large-sized pencils for students with lower motor control
3. Students who need simpler pictures to work from observation will be given pre-selected books
4. Informal translation as needed for ELL students

F. Checking for understanding-

1. Did students use shapes to draw?
2. Can students say "observation" and state what it means to draw from observation?
3. Did students draw at least 3 animals?

G. Closure-

1. Clean up
2. Review: "What kind of drawing did we do today? Were we drawing from our imaginations?" Prompt students to reach the term "observation"
