2. Content-
Tints, shades, monochromatic, depth, themes and organization.
 
3. Goals: Aims/Outcomes-
1. Understanding the concept of mono-chromatic, tints and shades.
2.Creating an original piece of art using the concepts discussed.
3.Using tints and shades to create depth.
 
4. Objectives-
1.Students will create an original image that is complete and uses their "best work".
2.Students will create an painting that is monochromatic (one color, at least one tint of that color and at least one shade of that color, at least one instance of white and one instance of black.
3.Students work must be neat and organized.
 
5. Materials and Aids-
Tempera paint, brushes, 12x12 sheets of thick paper or canvas, pallets and cups.
 
6. Procedures/Methods-

A. Introduction-

1.Show example piece ask what students notice about it.
2.Group discussion, what is a tint? What is a shade? What does monochromatic mean?
3.
 

B. Development-

1.Model practice making tints and shades.
2.Model dividing their paper or canvas into sections in order to create a unique image using the concept of monochrome paint. They need at least five sections.
3.Assign each section with a tone.
 

C. Practice-

1.Students make a practice monochromatic mixing paper. They divide a rectangular piece of paper into five sections. They choose one color to work with. They fill their first section with white paint. They fill their last section with black paint. The middle section is filled with their color. The second space is a for their tint, they mix their color with white and fill the space with the new tint they have created. In the fourth space they mix their color with black and fill the fourth space with that color.
2.This practice helps them learn how to mix paint and what the outcomes will be.

D. Independent Practice-

1.Practice Sheet.
2.Division and assignment of canvas.
3.Application of tones to canvas.
 

E. Accommodations (Differentiated Instruction)-

1.Alternative method: using play dough to explore color mixing. Hand student white and black play dough and the choice in a color play dough.
2.Have them break the white and black in half. Have them break their color into three pieces.
3. Have them take a black piece and a color piece and squish them together until a new color has emerged, do the same with the white.
4. Line up the balls of playdough from lightest to darkest.
 

F. Checking for understanding-

1.Check practice sheet. Ask if they colors are in order from lightest to darkest.
2.Check canvas division and ask if they have at least five sections.
3. Check assignment of each division with a tone. Is each tone represented?
4. Application of colors, does the color fill the whole space? Is it neat and organized?
 

G. Closure-

1.We put all the completed projects up on a wall or table for viewing.
2.Each student can comment or ask a question from another artist. The comment must be positive or helpful, keeping the feelings of the artist in mind.
