Color Wheels
 
3. Goals: Aims/Outcomes-
1. Student will visibly see the differences between primary and secondary colors.
 
4. Objectives-
1. Student will be able to identify the 3 primary colors
2. Student will be able to identify secondary colors.
3. Student will know how to combine two primary colors to make a secondary color.
 
5. Materials and Aids-
Paper plates, Play doh, card board triangles, glue and picture of a color wheel
 
6. Procedures/Methods-

A. Introduction-

1. Have students sit at tables.
2. Open class with a picture of a color wheel.
3. Explain we will be making a color wheel with the 3 primary colors and 3 secondary colors.
 

B. Development-

1. I will present to the students a sample of the primary colors red, blue and yellow from the color wheel I post on the white board.
2. I will point the primary colors out on the color wheel.
3. I will point the secondary colors out on the color wheel.
4. I will pass out to each student, a red, blue and yellow can of play doh.

C. Practice-

1. Each student will pinch a small amount of red play doh out of can, smash it on the card board triangle and then place it on the paper plate.
2. Each student will pinch a small amount of yellow play doh out of can and smash it on the card board triangle. Then place it on the paper plate.

3. Each student will pinch a small amount of blue play doh out of can, smash it on the card board triangle and then place it on the paper plate.
4. Each student will pinch a small amount of red and yellow play doh out of cans, smash it together and roll it in hands so the two colors are completely combined. Then place it on the card board triangle and press with fingers to shape it. Place orange piece of play doh on the paper plate between the red and yellow.
5.Each student will pinch a small amount of yellow and blue play doh out of cans, smash it together and roll it in hands so the two colors are completely combined. Then place it on the card board triangle and press with fingers to shape it. Place green piece of play doh on the paper plate between the yellow and blue.
6. Each student will pinch a small amount of red and blue play doh out of cans, smash it together and roll it in hands so the two colors are completely combined. Then place it on the card board triangle and press with fingers to shape it. Place purple piece of play doh on the paper plate between the red and blue.
7. Have students use Elmers glue to stick the colored play doh piece in place on the paper plate.
8. Have student put paper plate in their cubby to dry.
9. Once dry, student make take home to share with their parents.
 

Checking for understanding-

1. Ask students to name primary colors.
2 Ask students to name the secondary colors.
3 Ask students what to primary colors make up the secondary colors.
 

Closure-

1. ask students to point to things in room made with primary colors.
2.Ask students to point to things in room made with secondary colors
3. Ask students to look at their clothing and tell me if the color falls under a primary color or secondary color.

 
Teacher Reflection-
In this art lesson, I have taught the students about primary and secondary colors. I have taught them how to combined primary colors to get secondary colors. Children need to know this a fairly early age because everything in their lives has color and they need to know how and where it comes from.
