1. Topic-
Cultural Concept
A Classroom Cultural Quilt
 
2. Content-
Students decorate a piece of A4 paper in the way of their family culture. The sheets of paper are then hole punched and tied together with ribbon to eventually create a cultural quilt, which can be displayed on the wall
 
3. Goals: Aims/Outcomes-
1. Pupils learn about different cultures, languages and religions within their classroom
2. Helps promote diversity in a positive, exciting way, students can share their different cultures with classmates in a fun, colorful way
3. Pupils can express their way of life in a confident way showing being different to others is a good thing, whether it be skin color, hair color or the way people speak etc.
 
4. Objectives-
1. Pupils can learn about different cultures through communicating with one another
2. Displaying cultures in a creative exciting way
3. Help pupils feel free and safe in the presence of cultural or religious difference helping them develop the confidence they need to learn
 
5. Materials and Aids-
paper, pens, glue, colored tissue paper, scissors, paint, PowerPoint, ribbon, stencils
 
6. Procedures/Methods-

A. Introduction-

1. Focus on introducing different cultures and different ways of life amongst others
2. Concentrate on expressing how being different is a good thing
3. Introduce class with a video on diversity
 

B. Development-

1. Watch video on diversity and different cultures and get class to brainstorm and write down what they saw in the video
2. Demonstrate how some cultures shown will be evident within the classroom amongst the pupils
3. Get pupils to discuss on their table their family culture
 

C. Practice-

1. Pupils then get given a A4 piece of paper and start designing a poster in any way they want their family culture
2. Get the pupils to make it as creative and colorful as possible using a range of materials
3. Monitor each table of 8, guiding each child differently as others will be more independent than others
 

D. Independent Practice-

1. Encourage the children to draw, write key words and express how they feel towards their culture
2. Leave the video running in the background to help motivate and keep the pupils engaged
3. Emphasize that the pupils speak to one another about their way of life such as religions, languages and general appearance
 

E. Accommodations (Differentiated Instruction)-

1. Express that each poster will be different and this is a good thing
2. Demonstrate reflective learning - have the pupils reflect on what they have learnt
 

F. Checking for understanding-

1. Get a small amount of pupils to come forward at the front of the class to present their different posters
2. Get the pupils to ask each other questions - class discussion is important
3.
 

G. Closure-

1. Collect posters then hole punch each one individually before tying each piece of paper together to create the cultural quilt
