5.talk with my friends and my teacher about my art.
6.write my story (personal narrative grades 3-5)

6. Procedures/Methods-

A. Introduction-

1.Explore Web site
2.View images using What do you see and I wonder strategies.
3.Compare and contrast winter counts with modern personal narratives such as diaries, scrapbooks, and online narratives.
4.Tell students they are going to create an original winter count.
 

B. Development-

1.Brainstorm important family events.
2.Design symbols to represent the event, characters, setting, etc.
 

C. Practice-

1.Help students tear the edges of their pages to mimic the texture of an animal hide.
2.Remind them to plan how they will use their space before they start drawing
 

D. Independent Practice-

1.Students will draw and color their counts.
 

E. Accommodations (Differentiated Instruction)-

1. Modify writing assignment by age group and ability.
2. Assist those who have difficulty managing space.
3.Assist with tearing for smaller kids.
4.Assist any students who have difficulty using their hands with tearing and drawing.
5. Modify symbol sheets for k-2 and 3-5.
 

F. Checking for understanding-

1. Monitor students as they work.
2. Talk with students about their work.
 

G. Closure-

1.Sharing and talking about finished work.
2.Cleaning the work space.
