3.Train participants to recognize & respond quickly & efficiently

1.Describe the characteristics of a professional lifeguard.
2.Identify decision-making skills & explain how they apply to lifeguarding.
3.Define legal considerations & explain how they affect a lifeguard. |

|
ARC "Lifeguarding" participant manual; "Lifeguarding" DVD set; DVD
player & monitor; Activity worksheets; newsprint & markers; LCD projector
& monitor. |

6. Procedures/Methods-
|
A. Introduction-
1.Welcome participants, give background, identify self as Red Cross
instructor.
2.Review facility policies & procedures, important locations (i.e.
restroom, first aid kit).
3.Distribute & review course outline; orient participants to Lifeguarding
Manual. |

|
B. Development-
1.Direct participants to Lifeguard Manual pp1-6.
2.Review characteristics of a professional LG, decision making process
used by LGs, legal considerations pertaining to LGs.
3.Show video clips addressing decision making process. |
|
|
C. Practice-
1.Conduct group activity: FIND model scenarios.
2.Conduct group activity: Legal considerations part I.
3.Conduct question/answer period on lesson material. |

D. Independent Practice-
1.Handout "FIND model scenarios" to be individually completed.
2.Guided discussion "Legal considerations" with individual answers
processed. |
