Creating a Small Business Plan with Concept Maps.
 
2. Goals: Aims/Outcomes-
1. Understand the many aspects of starting and operating a small business
2. Use Inspiration software to map the interconnected steps of begining and operating a small business
3. Use all available resources to research aspects of an ice cream shop
 
3. Objectives-
1. Produce a small business plan concept map
2. Create a checklist to be used to start a small business
3. Perform research to account for all aspects of starting a specific small business
 
4. Materials and Aids-
Computer with projection capability; Desktop computers with Inspiration software; Web access for research; Access to local ice cream shop owner
 
5. Procedures/Methods-

A. Introduction-

1. Teacher will review previous lessons on small business startup and operations
2. Teacher will review the use of Inspiration to create concept maps of interconnected fields
3. Teacher will explain that students will put this knowledge into practice by creating a "conceptual" small business of their own
 

B. Development-

1. Students will be grouped into groups of 3.
2. Students will be given 5 minutes to brainstorm all aspects required to start and operate a small ice cream shop.
3. After 5 minutes, students will discuss their initial brianstormed ideas;
4. With class input, the teacher will begin building a concept map using the projector to illustrate it for the class.
 

C. Practice-

1. Students will be given an additional 5 minutes to brainstorm
2. Students will then organize their brainstormed ideas into related concepts using Inspiration to create a concept map;
3. Students will be encouraged to add to their concept maps as new aspects of their business plan become evident.
 

D. Independent Practice-

1. Students will use the internet to research tasks necessary to start and operate their small business.
2. Students will contact a local ice cream shop owner and discuss their business plan.
3. Students will add to their business plan based on their further research.
4. Each student group will present their business plan to the class for discussion.
5. Each student group will convert their concept map into a checklist and submit it for grading by the teacher.
 

E. Accommodations (Differentiated Instruction)-

1. All individual accomidations will be made.
2. Students will work in groups of varying academic levels.
3. All necessary assistive devices will be provided.
 

F. Checking for understanding-

1. Students will present their concept maps and discuss the reasons for differing organizational schemes.
2. Students will submit their Inspiration checklists for grading according to the rubric
3.
 

G. Closure-

1. The class will discuss the applications of concept maps to other small businesses and industries.

1. Students will be evaluated according to the following rubric:
 
8. Teacher Reflection-
1. I will keep copies of the best business plans as examples for future classes in the same subject.
2. Future lessons on this topic will use other businesses generated by class discussion as their exemplar.
