1.swbat understand why the American system of government and economics is preferable.

4. Objectives-
1. Teach about systems of government and money.
2. play the Disney trivia game to illustrate the differences in the two economic systems
 
5. Materials and Aids-
little m&ms bags. Plastic bags. PowerPoint game. Chalk for each participant.
 
6. Procedures/Methods-

A. Introduction-

1. What do you know about your government?
2. What can you tell me about other countries governments?
 

B. Development-

1. Explain what makes the US different from other governments (we pick all our leaders,the government's powers are usually very limited.)
2. Teach about parliamentary government styles (Britain, Israel etc., prime ministers chosen by the people who were chosen by the public and moderate government intervention in everyday life).
3. Teach about communist, and dictatorial style governments (one leader with absolute power, high government intervention in daily life, government confiscation of wealth etc.
 

C. Practice-

1. The Disney trivia Game (see attached)

 

D. Independent Practice-

1. have the student look up four countries, decide if they are 'free countries' and explain why.
 

E. Accommodations (Differentiated Instruction)-

1.if you use this for much younger students you may want to adjust the c and y rules, as the distress of not getting as much or not getting any will over shadow the lesson being taught. Maybe trade out m and ms for colored bits of paper or something equally useless.

 

F. Checking for understanding-

after the game consider briefly describing a countries system of government (in north Korea the government runs everything. What kind of system do you think that is?) etc.
 

G. Closure-

1. Now that you know about the different types of systems which do you think is best? (wait for the obvious response- the American system)
