Understanding intercultural implications when developing a media campaign

3. Goals: Aims/Outcomes-
1. To obtain an understanding of cultural differences and interpretations
2.To gain insight into the empathy of cultural considerations
3. Learn to apply these concepts into a group project where individuals may have different cultural perceptions
 
4. Objectives-
#2 -Develop student's research, analytical, presentation, writing and communication skills. (The class assignment will focus on analytical and presentation skills).
#3 - Prepare students to understand the effects of media and communications. (Class lecture on cultural considerations).
#4 - Foster student's creative understanding and application of communications media (through group activity)

White board and marker
Assignment/Group activity handout
 
6. Procedures/Methods-

A. Introduction-

1. Notes will be provided on D2L.
2. The best way to learn how to communicate with another culture, is to interact with them!
3. Lead into a review reading assignment from Usinier
 

B. Development-

1. "Recognize how a better understanding of cultural differences can help improve performance"
2.What does this mean? What are implications to consider when developing a media campaign? (Use white board to write down ideas)
3.How do we determine content? Exploring implications and effective creativity is WHERE YOU COME IN.
4.Does a play on words have a significant difference between cultures? Can you use idioms? (transition in to group activity)
 

C. Practice-

1.Break the class into two groups
2. Provide the idioms group activity
3. Explain the rubric that would be used in grading a similar group activity
4. Have the two groups present their interpretations to the class.
 

F. Checking for understanding-

1. Use white board to develop student ideas for cultural considerations. Provide feedback and open ended questions to promote critical thinking skills
2.Use group rubric in the group activity to demonstrate the expectancies and goals.
 

G. Closure-

1.Provide a few other idioms and discuss the types of campaigns (audio, visual or both) that might be effective for multicultural usage.
2. Review assignments for next class and deadlines for upcoming projects (Reading in text and D2L)
3. First quiz is a week from today on the role of languages in media campaigns
