Expected Outcome Of This Lesson Plan-
1.Class will read and work together in small groups, identifying and explaining external and internal conflicts
2.Each group will write and discuss Rainsford's and Zaroff's personal struggles.
3. The group will finish reading the story.

Teaching Methods-

1. Lesson Introduction-

1.Journal question: Think about a personal struggle you have had in the past or that you are now experiencing. Identify if it is external or internal, or a combination of both. Then, write ten lines explaining that struggle/conflict. Then, two more lines, suggest how you might resolve this conflict.
 

2. Lesson Progression-

1.Vocabulary practice to reinforce Words to Own: Ask students yes or no questions to sentences and whether the word is being used correctly; to each answer, suggest they define the meaning of the word.
2.Review Plot Mountain, focusing on conflict.
3.List different conflicts: External/Internal/ Man vs.Man, etc.
 

3. Guided Practice-

1.Students get into 9 different groups to read and take note of the conflicts they come across while reading.
2.Each reads a paragraph out loud, then stops to analyze whether there was a conflict or not in that reading.
3.If so, the group discusses and agrees on what kind of conflict, and between whom or what, and internal or external.
If no conflict is found, then the next student reads the next paragraph.
 

4. Student Practice-

1.Each student records each conflict type, _____vs.______, and explains the situation.
 

5. Learner Accommodations-

1.Plot mountain on board
2.Vocabulary worksheet with words and definitions
3.Lists on board of conflict types
 

6. Assessment-

1.Walk around the classroom and observe or answer student questions.
 

7. Lesson Closure-

1.Think-Pair Share about 1 thing they learned today about conflict.
2.Think-Pair Share about what they learned about vocabulary
