Title-
Historical Fiction: "Island of the Blue Dolphins" by Scott O'Dell
 
Background-
Vocabulary: Review of vocabulary words for Friday's test using SMARTBoard.
Reading: Review and discussion about the end of the novel, "Island of the Blue Dolphins," and time to work on the culminating unit project.
 


Expected Outcome Of This Lesson Plan-
1.The students will review the novel vocabulary in preparation for the test on Friday.
2. The students will critically reflect on the end of the novel, "The Island of the Blue Dolphins."
3. The students will demonstrate comprehension of the important characters and themes in the novel by creating newspaper editions about the novel.
 
Teacher Objectives-
1.The students will review the novel vocabulary on the SMARTBoard by completing the two matching activities and one analogy activity prepared by the teacher.
2.The students will demonstrate a clear comprehension of Chapters 28 and 29 of the novel by responding to the "Take Two" questions on the SMARTBoard. Students may discuss their answers with a classmate before responding aloud.
3. The students will demonstrate their thoughtful analysis of the characters, setting and plot of the novel "The Island of the Blue Dolphins" by drafting eight articles per pair of students, to be later published in a team-taught project by Mrs. Duerring and Ms. Ray. Mrs. Duerring will give examples of several of the required articles to be written and give students an opportunity to ask questions about how to craft similar articles for their student-written "newspaper."
 
Resources-
SMARTBoard activities (two matching, one analogy game), AirLiner, SMARTNotebook slides with examples of editorials/book reviews, obituaries, etc.
 
Teaching Methods-

1. Lesson Introduction-

1. VOCABULARY: Remind students of Vocabulary Test Friday, introduce review activities on SMARTBoard.
2. READING: Review what is being asked of the students for the newspaper activity.
 

2. Lesson Progression-

1.VOCABULARY: Allow students to take turns moving the correct word to the correct definition on the SMARTBoard(a mix of voluntarily answers and and calling upon students).
2.READING: Show examples collected by the teacher of good articles to model for the students' own pieces for their newspaper.
 

3. Guided Practice-

1.VOCABULARY: Teacher guides students through the SMARTBoard activities, allow students to ask questions about the word meanings.
2.READING: Allow students time to begin writing their drafts in class so they may ask questions of their partners and the teacher.
 

4. Student Practice-

1.VOCABULARY: Assign students to study for the test on Friday.
2. READING: Allow students to continue working on their drafts, assign students to finish at least two drafts for the computer lab period on Friday.
 

5. Learner Accommodations-

1.Mrs. Duerring will circulated through the room to make sure students are on task, and will provide suggestions to students who need help getting their stories started.
2. Students may work with a partner to complete newspaper project.
 

6. Assessment-

1. SMARTBoard tool shows green checkmarks (all correct) or red marks if incorrect.
2. Probing questions in regards to the "Take Two" to make sure students comprehend the challenges the protagonist meets.

7. Lesson Closure-

1. Give time for students to ask questions about the vocabulary test and/or word meanings.
2. Allow students to work on their article drafts for the last 5-10 minutes of clas so they may ask any questions about the assignment that they uncover.
 
Measuring Student Progress-
1. Students will write a final report integrating the vocabulary.
