The students will be working with -ap word families.
 


Expected Outcome Of This Lesson Plan-
1. The students will work with words in the AP family and identify the word pattern.
2. The students will create word ladders for -an, -at and AP families.
 
Teacher Objectives-
1. The students will show understanding of the AP family patterns.
2. The students will work as a group to correctly complete sentences using words in the AP family.
3. The students will work as a group to complete word ladders for previous word families and the AP family.

Teaching Methods-

1. Lesson Introduction-

1. Review previous word families.
 

2. Lesson Progression-

1. Read and discuss word in the AP family from the word box on the worksheet.
2. Read each sentence and then have the students repeat the sentence as a group.
 

3. Guided Practice-

1. Students will fill in the blank space with the correct AP family word.
2. One student will share the word they selected and the group will discuss if it is a good choice.
3. The students will work together to complete the word families by recalling words they used.
 

4. Student Practice-

This activity is an introduction to a new word family and review of previous families. Students do not have independent practice at this time.
 

5. Learner Accommodations-

None
 

6. Assessment-

1. Monitor that students are selecting the correct vocabulary word and crossing off words they already used.
2. Monitor that students are completing the word ladder as a group.
 

7. Lesson Closure-

1. The students and teacher will review the words placed on the word ladders.
2. Students will save the word ladder sheet. In the future we will add more words that follow the pattern as we explore consonant blends.
 
Measuring Student Progress-
1. Completion of the worksheets will be used to access if the students are ready for more challenging activities.
 
This lesson addresses ELA standard 2, specifically 2.1 which requires students to "select and apply efficient, effective decoding skills". The lesson requires students to use skills that ask them to read word that have common parts.
