Teacher Objectives-
1. SWBAT create notecards with a subject and verb.
2. SWBAT create notecards that include sentence expanders of the WHEN group (adverbial prepositional phrase, adverb clause), WHERE group (adverbial prepositional phrase), WHY group (adverb clause, infinitive phrase), CONDITION group (adverb/conditional clause), and HOW group (adverb, prepositional phrase, simile)
3. SWBAT rearrange notecards to create sentence variety and length.
4. SWBAT identify a fragment by creating a note card "sentence" that lacks a subject and/or verb.
 
Resources-

Teaching Methods-

1. Lesson Introduction-

1. Discuss today's learning targets.
2. Justify today's lesson by showing students the class assessment of their writing samples and the need for sentence variety improvement based on the data I have collected.
 

2. Lesson Progression-

1. Review how to create subjects, verbs and the various types of sentence expanders.
2. Prior to assigning each "new activity" on the note cards, I will model the procedure on the Smart Board.
 

3. Guided Practice-

1. On their note cards, students will create original sentences that include sentence expanders.

6. Assessment-

1. Students will be assessed on correctness while they are creating and arranging their note cards
2. Students will receive immediate feedback during the class period.
3. Future assessment will involve students revising the journal entry of their choice as they improve their sentence variety.
4. Revised journals will be assessed, and data will be tracked to guide future, individualized instruction.
 

7. Lesson Closure-

1. Volunteers will read strong, vivid sentences to the class of examples of success in using varying lengths of sentences.
 
Measuring Student Progress-
1. Summary essay on the topic.
