6. Procedures/Methods-

A. Introduction-

Pre-Reading Questions to engage students:

1. How many of you own a smart phone?

2. Why do you think smart phones have become so popular?

3. Choose what you think the article will say about why smartphones are popular?
a. because people like to connect with each other
b. because they are inexpensive to use
c. because people like the latest technology

 

B. Development-

2. Warm-up Activity: Students will use the extended vocabulary on page 6 to complete sentences.
3. Introduction of Vocabulary: Students will elicit the meaning of words in context
 

C. Practice-

After students are introduced to the new vocabulary within the text, they will have a jigsaw reading activity in groups of three. Each student within the group will explain what was in their reading section. Teacher will model using the first paragraph.
 

D. Independent Practice-

1. Students will reread text if needed, and independently answer p. 8, part A, B, and C

2. Students will check answers together

3. Heterogeneous group activity will require students to think critically about the "What do you Think" Questions on page 9. They will choose 1 question

Students will each be given a different colored marker and a sheet of paper and asked to contribute at least one sentence to the question.

The students will post their papers on the the wall. Teacher will check to see that each colored marker has been used for at least one sentence to ensure that all students were engaged.


 

E. Accommodations (Differentiated Instruction)-

1. Early finishers will practice writing the vocabulary in sentences.

2. Students within group will be able to help lower level students, but each students must do her own writing.

 

F. Checking for understanding-

Students will be asked what they learned in the lesson.
