1. learn where students are at with familiarity with food labels
2. Provide a simple introduction to how and what to look for on labels
3. Spark some interest in students to begin to look for themselves
 
4. Objectives-
1.Students will analyze a
provided food label quickly learn what they know and do not know about
the information provided
2.Students will collaborate food label information
3.Students will analyze why we eat, and what influences food choices
 
5. Materials and Aids-
Teacher will display a
food label via by doc camera on the board

6. Procedures/Methods-

A. Introduction-

1.Bell Ringer: Students will
attempt to answer: 1) # of servings 2) main ingredient 3)Nutrient values
4) how many ingredients 5) list 3 ingredients you have no idea what it
is

B. Development-

1.In your learning
groups: discuss these answers and be prepared to present one set of
answers you agree on and you believe is correct
2.Group responsibilities: facilitator, time keeper, recorder, conflict
resolution

C. Practice-

1. Methods of sharing group
results: write answers on the board, present lap top to the doc camera,
text the answers to Mr. Anderson who will display with doc camera, or
tweet
2.Discussion questions: 1) why are there so many different answers
2)what nutrient info is healthy 3) what nutrient info is not healthy 4)
in this 1.75 oz bag how many of you eat 1/2 of that or share with since
it consists of two servings 5) allow for random discussion &
questions,

 

D. Independent Practice-

1. CLASS Question: Why
do we eat? Give them short/silent think time: then brainstorm answers
writing them on the board-record all answers
2. May need to stimulate responses with provoking questions
3. Draw a line under your Bell Ringer for the day and put these
categories: Hunger - Social - Time
Take the responses from the board and list them in each category (apply
to you know incorrect answers)
 

E. Accommodations (Differentiated Instruction)-

1.group work: provided so
students can help each other
2.answers can be provided via writing, computer-possibly text
3.identified students who finish early can assist others
 

F. Checking for understanding-

Formative Assessments

2.Look at at least one food label tonight and be prepared to share your findings tomorrow
