A printed check-off list for physical indicators of a pending flare-up.
 
6. Procedures/Methods-

A. Introduction-

1.Who am I? Who is affected?
2.Why are we having this educational review? What is the problem?
3.Who benefits from the information being reviewed?
 

B. Development-

1.Commonly prescribed medications.
2.Proper use of medications, both pills and inhalers.
3.Proper use of nebulizer equipment.
 

C. Practice-

1.Return demonstration of inhaler use, mouth care after inhaler use.

2.Steroids when to take, taper off, take with food.

3.Weight monitoring, checking legs, ankles and feet for edema.
 

D. Independent Practice-

1.Daily weight monitoring for 2 weeks, record weight daily, record medication intake, record daily activity, record exercise amount. Monitor diet, food and fluid intake.
RTC in 2 weeks with recorded data for analysis.
 

E. Checking for understanding-

1.Review of home data in 2 weeks. Person to identify internal or external stressors during those 2 weeks. How these stressors affected their COPD?

3.What did you earn about yourself during the 2 week self-monitoring session?
 

F. Closure-

1.Why it is important for people to be more efficient at self-monitoring with chronic conditions such as COPD?
2.Each person should have the confidence that they can control their chronic conditions, but are able to recognize when to seek medical assistance for safety.
