Creating Image Meaning Through Art
 
2. Content-
Proper hand washing techniques and preventing illnesses such as the common cold and the flu
 
3. Goals: Aims/Outcomes-
1.Students to understand the importance of imagery and education
2.Students understand the importance of hand washing and how it is the first line of defense to disease
3.Students let their imagination come alive through art and visualization.
 
4. Objectives-
1.Students will identify way to draw a representation of proper hand washing techniques.
2.Students will determine what practices can be utilized to prevent illnesses.
3.Students will develop their thoughts through art work.
 
5. Materials and Aids-
Crayons, colored pencils, drawing paper or posterboard, hand washing station
 
6. Procedures/Methods-

A. Introduction-

1.Teacher will show students slides of what can contaminate your hands during the day and how many times a day you touch your face or mouth.
2.Teacher will show research of what microorganisms can grow on your hands.
3.Teacher will state statistics of illnesses that can be eliminated by simply washing your hands.
 

B. Development-

1.Teacher will demonstrate proper hand washing techniques
2.Teacher will show different hand sanitizers that are available if soap and water are not available.
3.Teacher will show power point of different disinfecting agents.
 

C. Practice-

1.Teacher will monitor each student's hand washing skills.
2.Teacher will have open discussion with the students regarding their knowledge of disinfecting agents.
3.The teacher will have each student state different examples of hand sanitation products and what ingredient is in each. Also state what illnesses they can prevent.
 

D. Independent Practice-

1.Student will independently draw a representation of proper hand washing skills.
2.Student will incorporate in their drawing different ways to prevent the spread of infection.
3.Studnet, without many words, will draw their understanding of the importance of disinfecting, not only their hands, but also areas they frequently come in contact with (cell phone, computers, remotes, pens, make-up, etc.)
 

E. Accommodations (Differentiated Instruction)-

1.If students are unable to draw, they will be asked to come up with another artistic way of demonstrating proper hand washing--either through singing a song while washing their hands for the appropriate amount of time or making up a dance.
2.They will also be given the opportunity to color an outline of representations of proper disinfection.
 

F. Checking for understanding-

1.Studnets will present their visual representation to the class.
2.Students visual representation will be graded based on a rubric that will cover their basic understanding of prevention of disease and proper hand washing techniques.
 

G. Closure-

1.Students will be asked to display their artwork around the school to help educate fellow students on the importance of hand washing.

1.Students visual representation will be graded based on a rubric that will cover their basic understanding of prevention of disease and proper hand washing techniques.
 
8. Teacher Reflection-
I was very impressed by the amount of artistic ability the students possessed. They really enjoyed this activity and their imagination really flowed. Next time I wish to give them not so many rules to follow and different coloring devices to use other than crayons, such as chalk, paint, pastels, charcoal, even clay.
