When someone is injured or suddenly becomes ill, there is usually a critical period before you can get medical treatment and it is this period that is of the utmost importance to the victim. What you do, or what you don't do, in that interval can mean the difference between life and death. You owe it to yourself, your family and your neighbors to know and to understand procedures that you can apply quickly and intelligently in an emergency.

The Philippine Red Cross (PRC) offered first aid tips for people who will be visiting cemeteries to pay their respects to their loved ones.

"(As) much as we honor this custom, we should also take into account our personal safety," PRC Secretary General Gwendolyn Pang said in an article posted late Thursday on the PRC website.

The PRC also said it will set up first aid stations with ambulances manned by trained staff and volunteers in several memorial parks nationwide.

The PRC's first aid tips include:

In case of minor wounds, clean the wounded area with soap and water before applying antiseptics like povidone iodine (not alcohol), and cover the wound with gauze.

In case of severe bleeding, apply direct pressure over the wound using gauze and bring the patient to the hospital or to a nearby first aid station inside the cemetery.

In case of contusion, apply ice compress over the area for more than 20 minutes (intermittent).

In case of fainting, do not give ammonia to the patient. Instead, let him/her lie, with feet raised 8-12 inches above. If the patient is conscious, ventilate him/her, loosen his/her tight clothing and give him/her beverages.

In case of chest pain, transport the patient to the nearest hospital.

In case of cramps, apply cold compress, rest the affected area and elevate, if possible. Have the victim stretch out the affected muscle to counteract the cramp. Massage the cramped muscle firmly but gently. If cramps persist, seek medical help.

The PRC also reminded the public to keep their homes well-secured.

"Before leaving home, be sure that: (a) you do not leave a candle burning; (b) you unplug all electrical appliances, and (c) you lock your house to avoid unwanted intruders," it said.

"Never leave your children unattended," the PRC added.

All Souls' Day, November 2, is a Catholic feast day for remembering the dead.

However, millions of Filipinos start flocking to cemeteries as early as November 1, All Saints' Day, also a Catholic feast for honoring all saints, both those who are known and the unknown.

Many Filipinos even start visiting cemeteries on Halloween (also known as All Hallows' Eve), October 31, the eve of All Saints' Day (previously called All Hallows' Day). –VVP, GMANews.TV
