Nutrition - What Go Into Food Groups |

This lesson is about Nutrition and identifying what kinds of food
go into which food group on the food pyramid. |
|
|
3. Goals: Aims/Outcomes-

1. Promote Health.
2. Enjoy nutrition.
3.Reinforce daily eating habits. |
|
|
4. Objectives-
|
1.Learn about the Food pyramid.
2.Identify what foods are in each food group.
3.Gain knowledge of healthy eating habits. |

|
5. Materials and Aids-
|
Assuming there are 20 students in the class, you will need 5 picture
sets of: cauliflower, green beans, beef, chicken, walnuts, broccoli,
spinach, onion, pomegranate, apple, oranges, avocado, grapes, milk,
yogurt, ice cream, cheese, bread, muffins, noodles, brown rice, tortilla,
and cupcakes. You will also need 5 poster boards, glue or tape, rulers
and pencils. |

6. Procedures/Methods-
|
A. Introduction-
1.To start the lesson plan, I'll show the students a picture on
the projector of the food pyramid and ask them what they know about
it.
2.From there, I will hand each student their own individual food pyramid
so they can use it for the remainder of the lesson as a scaffolding
approach.
3.I will then put students into groups of 4, with 5 groups total and
hand them the materials needed including the pictures of the foods
mentioned in the materials section, a poster board, glue or tape,
a ruler and pencil if needed. |

B. Development-
1.I will start from the top of the food pyramid and explain what
kind of foods are in each section with a PowerPoint presentation.
2.I will also include pictures of some of the foods that are in each
section of the food pyramid, some of the pictures being ones that
were already given to them.
3.I will wrap of the lecture and PowerPoint by explaining why we have
to eat healthy and keep our bodies fit. |

C. Practice-
1.The students in each group will draw their own food pyramid on
the poster board.
2.The students will then be given the opportunity to put the pictures
of food into the correct section of the food pyramid.
3.As the teacher, I will then evaluate the groups' food pyramid
and check for accuracy. |

|
D. Independent Practice-
1.After they have completed the project, the students will return
to their own seats and work on an individualized assignment.
2.The students will be given a worksheet that asks questions about
the food pyramid and what kinds of foods go into each section.
3.This will measure if the student understands the lesson that was
presented. |

|
E. Accommodations (Differentiated Instruction)-
1.For students that might need a little more review, I will give
them a review sheet of the PowerPoint to look over while doing the
project. |
|
|
F. Checking for understanding-
1.At the end of the lesson, I will give the students a quiz.
2.The quiz will consist of the foods that they were asked to place
correctly on the food pyramid in their groups, as well as some that
were not reviewed but close comparisons. |

G. Closure-
1.Finally I will remind students to be aware of what their eating
and think about it at lunch that day. |
