3. Goals: Aims/Outcomes-
1. Describe and define the field of orthodontics.
2. Identify types of malocclusion.
3. Identify various corrective orthodontic treatments available today.
4. Identify uses of headgear.
5. Describe Wisconsin's role of an orthodontist assistant.
 
4. Objectives-
1. Students will be able to define and describe the field of orthodontics at 100% accuracy by the end of the class.
2. By the end of the lecture students will differentiate between Class I, Class II, and Class III occlusion with a pass/fail grade.
3. After reviewing photographs of various malocclusion, students will be able to identify a crossbite, overbite, overjet, underbite and underjet at 100% accuracy.
4. By the end of the class, students will be able to name various methods to treat a patient with braces with a pass/fail grade.
5. By the end of the lecture, students will identify types of diagnostic records needed in orthodontics with a pass/fail grade.
6. Throughout the class students must adopt a positive attitude toward both their peers and instructor for a pass/fail grade.
 
5. Materials and Aids-
PowerPoint,
Invisalign and Sure smile handouts, orthodontic models, examples of brackets, wires, rubber bands, and elastomeric ties, examples of panoramic and cephalometric x-rays.
 
6. Procedures/Methods-

A. Introduction-

1. Introduce myself
2. Identify goals and objectives of course
3. Discuss students own views and experiences with orthodontics.
 

B. Development-

1. PowerPoint with direct instruction.
2. Each of the following discussions will be introduced:
1) Define field of orthodontics and reasons for seeking treatment.
2) Malocclusion
3) Facial Symmetry and extra-oral photography for charts.
3) Type of x-rays and models needed for patient charts.
4) Types of orthodontic treatments available today.
5) Tools and materials needed in orthodontics.
6) Headgear
7) Retainers
8) Oral hygiene with orthodontics.
8) Wisconsin's law regarding orthodontic assistants.

 

C. Practice-

1. Group verbal quiz regarding malocclusion when looking at multiple pictures.

 

D. Checking for understanding-
