1. Topic-
2. Content-
The session will provide an informal platform enabling young parents
to discuss ideas for safe sleeping for babies under a year old using
current guidelines from the Foundation for Study into Infant Deaths
(FSIDS). To teach safe sleeping positions and environment for babies
under the age of one year to young vulnerable parents. |
3. Goals: Aims/Outcomes-
1.To teach young parents how to keep their young baby safe whilst
sleeping.
2.To ensure that any unsafe practices are highlighted through general
discussion.
3.To empower young parents with the confidence to make their own informed
safe decisions.
4. To provide young parents with a safe, non judgmental environment
in which they can discuss their own ideas or feelings if they wish.
4. Objectives-
1.To provide an informal session to encourage participation.
2.To empower the young parents to make any changes they feel necessary
to keep their babies safe.
3.To build a relationship which enables the young parents to feel
they can ask for help with anything at any stage.
4. To enable the parents to identify safe and unsafe practice when
caring for their babies.
5. To show an improvement on their knowledge from before the session.
6.To gain an insight into their perceptions on the effectiveness of
my teaching methods. |
5. Materials and Aids-
1.Leaflets from FSIDS.
2.Laminated pictures to promote discussion.
I will use laminated pictures to promote discussion. A spot the difference
'safe sleep' tool from FSIDS and safe sleep booklets from FSIDS for
the parents to take home. |
6. Procedures/Methods-
A. Introduction-
1. Explain the definition of Sudden Infant Death.
2. Explain that because we now know that many practices we used to
do are unsafe, and that because we now know much more about how to
keep our babies safe while sleeping that is now very rare.
I will introduce the subject by explaining that although cot death
is rare, it does still happen and there are easy things we can do
to help prevent it. |
B. Development-
1.Ask the group to jot down anything they already know about safe
sleeping on a piece of paper.
2. I will explain that I will pass round a bag with pictures regarding
safe sleep issues, take turns in pulling out a picture and then
everyone can join in with discussion.
C. Practice-
1.Pass round a bag with pictures of various items to stimulate group
discussion.
D. Independent Practice-
1. Ask everyone to complete a quiz.
2. Each will take turns in choosing a picture. I will use a set of
notes for each card to prompt discussion if no one has any ideas. |
E. Accommodations (Differentiated Instruction)-
Any one that does not wish to join in will be given a booklet to
take home and I will run through the key points to remember. |
F. Checking for understanding-
1. Ask if any one was unsure of anything or wanting to discuss anything
further?
2.Quiz sheet will be given out at the end of the session.
3.Spot the difference.
G. Closure-
1.Thank the parents for taking part.
2.Ask if there are any questions.
3.Remind them that cot death is rare but that it is sensible to take
precautions.
4.Give out leaflets.
7. Evaluation-
1.Check understanding by comparing original notes to final quiz
and evaluation form.
2.Evaluate session from a teaching point of view and complete a personal
reflection.
3 1.I will ask the parents to write down their ideas of safe sleeping
before the session. This will enable me to assess if my teaching method
has been successful.
4.I will hand out a quiz at the end of the session to test what knowledge
has been gained. |
