1. Topic-
Shoulder Anatomy and Pathology

2. Content-
List the important facts, key concepts, skills, or key vocabulary terms that you intend to cover. You can also prepare an outline with key learning outcomes. Basic shoulder anatomy, clinical evaluation, recommendations for referral, physical therapy

3. Goals: Aims/Outcomes-
To provide the healthcare practitioner with basic parameters for diagnosing and developing the appropriate plan of care for shoulder injuries.

4. Objectives-
1. Participants will be able to describe the function of the rotator cuff muscles in the shoulder using patient-appropriate wording without cuing during the lab portion of the course.
2. Participants will be able to successfully identify selected signs and symptoms of shoulder pathology that will benefit from physical therapy interventions by the end of the course.
3. Participants will demonstrate accurate testing of the rotator cuff muscle strength and selected special tests by the end of the course.

5. Materials and Aids-
PowerPoint presentation requiring use of computer and projector, Student handouts

6. Procedures/Methods-

A. Introduction-

1. Welcome to the course
2. Brief introduction of self and goals of course
3. ACTIVITY: shoulder movement examples

B. Development-

1. Teach participants information from the PowerPoint presentation, and demonstrate special tests used for clinical diagnosis of shoulder pathology.
2. Explain theories of shoulder mechanics and testing with examples as needed.
3. Ask/elicit questions at the end of the presentation to assure understanding.

C. Practice-

1. Participants are paired into groups of two and are tasked with performing basic special tests as instructed.
2. Participants practice manual muscle testing of the shoulder.
3. Participants practice observation of posture and shoulder position relevant to shoulder pathology.

D. Accommodations (Differentiated Instruction)-

1. 3-D model of the shoulder can be used as an adjunct for those who are kinesthetic learners

E. Checking for understanding-

1. Participants are asked to perform specific clinical tests and are evaluated for technique by the instructors.
2. Participants are given feedback regarding technique, and given the opportunity to perform the test again.
3. Participants are asked questions regarding information presented

F. Closure-

1. Recap objectives of the course
2. Thank participants for attending the course
3. Give participants contact info for questions/referral

7. Evaluation-
1. Participants are asked to fill out course evaluations, with specific questions regarding course content
2. Participants are asked to use new clinical skills in their practice as much as possible the first week after the course to solidify new skills.
