1. Topic-
Experiment to show how sugar effects our teeth. |
2. Content-
We use eggs to help us understand how sugary foods (such as soda)
can damage our teeth. Students will observe a before and after then
draw their findings. |
3. Goals: Aims/Outcomes-
1.For students to examine how sugar is harmful to their teeth.
2.To see if students can document their discoveries. |
4. Objectives-
1.Students will be able to witness how soda can negatively effect
their teeth.
2.Students will be able to observe the changes they see occurring.
3.Students will be able to draw what they saw take place with the
egg. |
5. Materials and Aids-
Hard boiled egg.
Small clear container.
One can of cola.
Handouts (attached). |
6. Procedures/Methods-
A. Introduction-
1.During dental health month, students have been learning about
how to take care of their teeth.
2.At circle time before this activity, discuss with students what
they think soda does to our teeth. |
B. Development-
1.During discussion explain to students the experiment that will
be taking place.
2.Have students predict what they think will happen to the egg. |
C. Practice-
1.Show students the hard boiled egg by allowing them to pass it
around the circle.
2.Ask students if/why the egg is similar to our teeth.
3.Explain to students that they will be conducting an experiment to
see what soda does to our teeth.
4.Ask students to predict what will happen if we let the egg soak
in soda for a few hours.
5. Write student's predictions on the board.
6.Place the egg in a small clear container filled with soda (only
let half the egg be in the soda so that students can see the contrast
of before/after).
7.If time allows, try brushing the egg with toothpaste! |
D. Independent Practice-
1.Follow up worksheet, students will draw what they observed. |
E. Accommodations (Differentiated Instruction)-
1.Students can work on their follow up activity together. |
F. Checking for understanding-
1.When students have finished their drawings, ask them informally
to explain what they saw. |
G. Closure-
1.End the lesson with a quick final discussion, asking the children
what they observed today. |
7. Teacher Reflection-
This was a very simple but beneficial lesson to help students better
understand how to take care of their teeth. |
