Tunnel of Oppression
 
2. Content-
The Tunnel of Oppression is a multimedia, interactive, experience designed to raise awareness of oppression of individuals throughout the country and the world. The Tunnel offers the opportunity for participants to walk through spaces designed by student groups and gain insight and information about the oppressed groups being highlighted. Some examples of groups that have been highlighted at other universities include: LGBTQ, homelessness, bigotry/political oppression, socioeconomic oppression, women's oppression, men's oppression, religious oppression, genocide, oppression of individuals with mental disorders, issues of education, issues of types of government, ageism, ableism, and many, many more.
 
3. Goals: Aims/Outcomes-
1. Raise students levels of awareness.

2. Engage viewers and their feelings.

3. Help students gain an understanding of others and a respect for differences.

4. Possible extra credit for students.

5. Have a diverse range of students participating.
 
4. Objectives-
1. Use multimedia to impact students

2. Have counselors at hand for debriefing

3. Getting organizations to sponsor event

4. Have a logical progression of seriousness of topic

5. Should not take more than 15 minutes, including debriefing

6. Procedures/Methods-

A. Introduction-

1. Six Scenes: Domestic Violence, Suicide, Binge Drinking, Homeless, Handicap, Body Image

2. Sheets on walls

3. "Stop" Person
 

B. Development-

1. Domestic Violence: couple dispute; use make up for bruises

2. Suicide: use fake gun

3. Binge drinking: party scene

4. Homeless: in hallway; at the end of tunnel, ask if they even noticed the person; use tarp and boxes; tie in GLBTQ - got kicked out when he/she came out to parents

5. Handicap: words on the walls the way dyslexic people see it

6. Body Image: mirror set up in hallway

7. Use sheets to cover walls in rooms and write offensive terms

8. Use sheets on walls in hallway to write general college statistics

9. "Stop" Person in every room: when they notice scene getting heavy, yell "STOP!" and actors freeze; they give a statistic to the audience and then allow the scene to continue

 

C. Practice-

1. Tour guides will take students through tunnel

2. Tour Guide Disclaimer: people are only playing roles, this does not in any way reflect their opinions; you may leave at any point during the tunnel if you feel uncomfortable

3. Each scene 45 seconds

4. Counselors available at end of tunnel to debrief
 

D. Independent Practice-

1. Randomly select students to take a survey about the effectiveness of the program
 

E. Accommodations (Differentiated Instruction)-

1. Allowing students to leave if they feel uncomfortable

2. Training faculty in debriefing

3. Come up with debriefing issues that may possibly come up, so that counselors can be ready
 

F. Checking for understanding-

1. Meetings with team captains in order to make sure everyone is meeting their specific tasks

2. Teams meet to get their specific tasks done
 

G. Closure-

1. Meeting after program is finished to get feedback and make notes for next year
