What is beautiful? An image study. |

2. Content-
|
In this lesson, students will start to understand how the brain
interprets beauty and what leads to that way of thinking. Students
will need to understand the words: beauty, bias, media, natural-selection. |
|
|
3. Goals: Aims/Outcomes-
|
1.Students will describe images; decide which person is beautiful
or not and why.
2.Students will understand media's role in shaping a person's thinking
about beauty.
3.Students will look at entire picture, not just focus on one part
of person. |
|
|
4. Objectives-
|
1.Students will look at the group of numbered pictures and decided
if model is beautiful or not beautiful.
2. Students will be able to explain the reason why beautiful or not
beautiful was selected by keeping notes on a graphic organizer on
each numbered photograph.
3.Students will find one positive thing in each photograph at the
end of the lesson and record it on the graphic organizer. |

5. Materials and Aids-
|
A series of photographs of "models" some with conventional beauty
and some with unique qualities or surroundings that are obvious. Such
as scars, missing limbs, burns, tattoos, smoking,etc.

6. Procedures/Methods-
|
A. Introduction-
1.Tell students they are going to look at a series of pictures of
models.
2.Tell students they are not to talk or share ideas with the group
during the initial viewing of pictures.
3.Students will mark each picture 1-10 as either beautiful or not
beautiful with an explanation of why. |

|
B. Development-
1.Group will discuss each picture and see how much each person was
in agreement.
2.Students will learn about the golden ratio.
3.Students will learn about the role of the media and culture in one's
definition of beauty. |
|
|
C. Practice-
1. Students will now see a new image and as a group, will determine
if the model is beautiful or not. Each person will be allowed to give
her own explanation as to what she thinks.
2. Notes will be taken for all to see on a white board.
3.All answers are accepted and no one is to feel bad for their opinion. |

|
D. Independent Practice-
1. Each student will look again at each photograph.
2.Each student will find one thing in each photograph that makes the
model beautiful.
3.Notes will be taken independently on each photograph. |
|
|
E. Accommodations (Differentiated Instruction)-
1.Instead of writing on a graphic organizer, a student can put post-it
notes on the location of the photograph where beauty is found.
2.Student can orally give opinions one-on-one with teacher instead
of writing down observations on a graphic organizer.

F. Checking for understanding-
1.Go over each photograph to each student to share what was found
to be beautiful in each picture.
2.Have each student pick one photograph where their thinking from
the first round of observations changed dramatically from the last
observation of photographs.
3.Have students pick favorite photograph and orally explain why it
has become their favorite. |

|
G. Closure-
1. Allow students time to reflect on how they are feeling and how
their thinking has changed during the lesson.
2.Allow for final discussions on all pictures. |
|
|
7. Evaluation-
|
1. Anecdotal notes will be taken by teacher during entire lesson
to see how students' thinking and behavior changed throughout the
lesson.
2.Collect graphic organizers to review students' ability to express
views about beauty in writing. |

|
8. Teacher Reflection-
|
After lesson and reviewing all graphic organizer, the teacher will
reflect on how the lesson went and what follow up mini-lessons may
be necessary or valuable before moving on to lesson 2. Also, the teacher
will make notes about possible for changes in this lesson for next
time. |
