Subject: Hand Washing
1. Topic-
Primary prevention of contagious diseases includes teaching young children and their caregivers about personal hygiene behaviors.
 
2. Content-
There are five key times to wash hands with soap and water: Before eating, After sneezing or coughing, After playing outdoors, After playing with pets and After using the toilet.
 
3. Goals: Aims/Outcomes-
1.Student will comprehend concepts related to health promotion and disease prevention.
2.Student will demonstrate the ability to practice health-enhancing behaviors and reduce health risks.
 
4. Objectives-
1.Student will identify the five most important times to wash their hands.
2.Each student will demonstrate proper technique for washing hands while singing the Spanish ABC's
 
5. Materials and Aids-
National Health Education Standards. Glitter, Bathroom with running water, soap.
 
6. Procedures/Methods-

A. Introduction-

1.Using the Internet have student surf the net for germs at cause health problems.
2.Print out photo's of germs.
3.Have student explained to the class what their germs might do to you if you "catch the bug".
 

B. Development-

1.Illustrate common methods of germ transmission, sneezing, coughing, touching toys or play surfaces, food contact surfaces and the toilet.
 

C. Practice-

1.Sprinkle glitter into both hands. Discuss how glitter represents germs.
2.move around the room touching students, toys, desks, and other objects.
3.Ask students to describe what happens to the glitter originally in your hands.
 

D. Independent Practice-

1.Turn on warm water.
2.Squirt of liquid soap into one palm.
3.Scrub hands together while singing the ABC's.
4.Rinse hands and dry with paper towel.
5.Turn off the faucet with the paper towel and discard.
 

E. Accommodations (Differentiated Instruction)-

1.For younger student, teacher may have to turn water on and off.

 

F. Checking for understanding-

1.Return Demo on hand washing.
2.All or most of the glitter is gone.
3.Have student recall the five times to watch hands.
 

G. Closure-

1.Review daily with student.
2.Peer check-up. Remind fellow student to wash hands.
 
7. Evaluation-
1.Watch student washing hands in the classroom or ask after returning from playground or restroom. And prior to lunch time.
