1.Learn the difference between safe and unsafe actions in the sewing lab
2.Correctly complete worksheet on pattern symbols
3.Practice proper procedures for threading a needle and preparing to hand-sew
 
4. Objectives-
1.By identifying and discussing lab safety, students will be more aware of their actions in a lab setting
2.Students will be able to correctly identify eight symbols commonly found on pattern pieces
3.Through hands-on application, students will develop basic hand sewing skills
 
5. Materials and Aids-

6. Procedures/Methods-

A. Introduction-

1.Students will complete safety worksheet according to verbal directions
2.While viewing the second section of the video, students will record the names of the pattern symbols that are on their graphic worksheet
3.Students will prepare their fabric for the button sewing exercise
 

B. Development-

1.Walk through the room pointing to the illustration while explaining their assignment
2.Explain during the video that they must listen for the names of the symbols and fill them into the correct locations on the worksheet
3.Demonstrate the steps required to get thread cut and how to thread through the needle
 

C. Practice-

1.Students work independently for both worksheets
2.Demonstrate, explain, and allow students to work alone
3.I will walk around to each student, checking their progress and helping them as needed
 

D. Independent Practice-

1.Students will complete the safety worksheet and we will discuss their findings afterwards
2.Students will fill in the worksheet during the video and I will collect them afterwards. The next day, they will get their paper back and students will have the opportunity to fill in and/or correct their answers.
 

E. Accommodations (Differentiated Instruction)-

1.Answers to both sides of the worksheet will be reviewed and students will be encouraged to fill in the correct responses
2.One on one instruction as needed for each individual student
 

F. Checking for understanding-

1.Worksheets will be collected and graded after students have had the chance to correct their answers.
 

G. Closure-

1.Students will be reminded that the information covered in this lesson will be the info they will use to successfully complete their pillow kits in the sewing lab
2.The methods learned and practiced in the button sewing exercise are the exact same methods they will apply when constructing their pillow kits
 
7. Evaluation-
1.Students will be expected to write in the correct answers on their worksheets as we review them together
2.A self-evaluation form will be provided to each student upon completion of the button sewing exercise. Their sewing sample must be attached to the self-evaluation.
