1. Topic-
Alphabet Review and Understanding Print Concept.

2. Content-
English Language

3. Goals: Aims/Outcomes-
1.Students will understand the basic features of a book i.e. cover, title, author, and illustrator.
2.Students will understand the concept of print right to left, top to bottom and front to back of book.
3.Students will recognize uppercase and lowercase letters of the alphabet.

4. Objectives-
1.Students will be introduced to the cover of the book- i.e. author, illustrator and predict what the story is about by looking at cover picture.
2.Students will follow along to recite the alphabet.
3.Students will sing the song ABC to become familiar with the order of the letters.

5. Materials and Aids-
Chicka Chicka Boom Story
Smartboard

6. Procedures/Methods-

A. Introduction-

1.Pre-assess children individually for recognition of letters. Using flashcards ask students to identify the letters (uppercase and lowercase). Use an EXCEL spreadsheet to store data.
2.Sing the ABC song, pointing to the letters as you sing on an ABC chart or Alphabet letters on wall.
3.Read story Chicka, Chicka, Boom, Boom. Before reading story discuss "who" and "what" about the author and illustrator. Ask students to predict what they think the story is about by reviewing the cover. Demonstrate how the book has front and back covers. Read story- children use choral reading skills to recite the alphabet.

B. Development-

1.Use the Smartboard to introduce the website Starfall. Demonstrate how to navigate the program to identify letters and phonemic awareness.
2.Using Smartboard watch you tube video Have fun teaching ABC song"
3.Follow up arts and crafts project. Magnetic Chicka, Chicka, Boom, Boom Tree. Make a magnetic Chicka, Chicka tree for students to practice letter recognition and retelling Chicka ,Chicka, Boom Boom. Materials: Small coffee cans (metal) Duct tape Brown paint green felt magnetic letters
Lesson Plan:

- Tape together 3 or 4 small coffee cans, stacked on top of each other.
- Spray paint the cans brown.
- Use green felt to make the leaves of the coconut tree.
- Save one lid for the top of the coconut tree and keep the magnetic letters inside.
- Let the students use the magnetic letters to retell the story and practice letter identification. (a to z teacher stuff n.d.)

C. Practice-

1.Using a premade Bingo game in Microsoft Excel program, the teacher can play a game for letter review.
2.Netbooks for independent use of the Starfall program.

D. Independent Practice-

1.Assessment chart for identifying letters
2.Matching games
3. Smartboard memory games

E. Accommodations (Differentiated Instruction)-

1.Give each child a copy of the Alphabet to follow along with their finger when singing the ABC song.
2.The websites Starfall and Have fun teaching are great for visual learners as well as kinesthetic learners. The songs on Have fun teaching have a rap type of beat and Starfall is a hands on program.
3.The arts and crafts project can be used for an assessment as students' place letters on the tree, the teacher can first assess the sequencing of the letters and also ask student to find a particular letter to place on the tree.

F. Checking for understanding-

1.Use flashcards of the Uppercase and lowercase letters as exit tickets for leaving group times. As a child is called to leave group (i.e. to get ready for snack) teacher can hold up a flashcard with a letter and ask child "What letter is this". Also for higher leveled students ask "What sound does the letter make" or "Give me a word that starts with___".

G. Closure-

1.Read story again
2.Choir reading in small groups.

7. Evaluation-
1.Rubrics
2.Observations
3. Assessment chart

8. Teacher Reflection-
I have taught this lesson many times over the years to both preschool and Kindergartners. This is my first year I have implemented technology into the lesson. It really made a difference especially for my lower level learners. The technology is motivating and it maintains their attention. I have found over the years that through songs students can learn many basic concepts (i.e. letter recognition, body identification, colors, and shapes). The website Have fun teaching is one of the best sites for children this age. They love to sing and dance while reciting the letter. Most days if I do not plan on using the website they ask for it. Thus far the children are retaining the letters previous taught and I truly believe one of the reasons is because of the technology I am using in the classroom. I recommend other websites such as Internet4teachers, which has many Kindergarten level programs. I will definitely start using these programs on both the Smartboard and netbooks. I did have the chance to explore Kidsparation on the netbooks and would also implement this program to reinforce letter recognition.
