Subject: Language Arts Grade: Kindergarten
1. Topic-
Students will identify and create rhymes.
 
2. Content-
Help students understand words that are said aloud. Includes phonics sounds, constants, and syllables.
 
3. Goals: Aims/Outcomes-
1. Students will be able to identify rhyming words in the story, "Rhyming Dust Bunnies," by Jan Thomas
2. Student's will create their own individual list of rhyming words and share them with the classroom.
3. Students will use these skills outside the classroom at home.
 
4. Objectives-
1. Students are going to listen to the story and think of words that may rhyme.
2. Students will work together to discuss words that rhyme with each other.
3. Students will bring home an assignment to work on as a family project.
 
5. Materials and Aids-
Reading book "Rhyming Dust Bunnies," Pencil, crayons, scissors, glue, and small poster board (Or hard stock paper.)
 
6. Procedures/Methods-

A. Introduction-

1.The teacher will ask students what they think rhyming words are.
2.The teacher will share the definition of "Rhyming" with students.
3.The teacher will read "Rhyming Dust Bunnies" to the students.
 

B. Development-

1.The teacher reads the story and as she/he reads she/he will write the rhyming words on the board for students to see their connections.
 

C. Practice-

1.The teacher will stop on pages where the dust bunnies are rhyming and ask students which words they think belong together in the rhyming category.
2. Students will share their ideas.
3.
 

D. Independent Practice-

1.Students will give examples of rhyming words as the teacher calls on them.
2.Students will work on a cut and paste rhyming worksheet at their desk.
 

E. Accommodations (Differentiated Instruction)-

1.For students that need extra practice before beginning the independent practice the teacher will organize a small group at a back table.
2.The teacher will work with these students to show how the rhyming words are connected to the other words that they rhyme with.
 

F. Checking for understanding-

1. The teacher will listen to the answers given by students and assist the child if needed.
2.Teacher will check students work as they finish.
 

G. Closure-

1.Students will turn in their assignment and return to their desk.
2. The teacher will give students a handout for a take home assignment. The teacher will give students materials need for the work and explain to the students that they are to go home and have their parents help them write down objects from home that rhyme.
 
7. Evaluation-
1. When students return with their take home assignment the teacher will check the work and check students progress on rhyming words.
2. When everyone has mastered the concept the teacher will inform students that in the near future they will bring three small items from home that their parents help them find.
