Dimes, Nickels & Pennies. Characteristics of coins. Comparing amounts of coins.
 
3. Goals: Aims/Outcomes-
1. Students will understand the difference between dimes and nickels
2. Students will know how many pennies make a dime, nickel, etc. (comparing amounts of money)
3. Students will know how much a quarter is worth
 
4. Objectives-
1.Students will graph amounts of coins.
2. Students will listen when directions are given, and participate when appropriate.
3. Students will identify different coins

6. Procedures/Methods-

A. Introduction-

1. Read the poem to the students
2. Assign tables to a coin. They need to make up an action for their verse.
3. The class will read the poem 3 times. Once together. One time with assigned tables. Once together.
 

B. Development-

1. I will then pull out the big coins and have the students list facts about the coins.

2. Talk about how much each coin is worth
Nickel:

3. Then we will compare amounts of coins and how many pennies equal a dime, nickel, quarter, etc.
 

C. Practice-

1. I will ask the students question and use choice sticks to have the students answer.

What coin is worth 5 cents?
What coin is worth 1 cent?
What coin is the smallest?
What coin is copper brown?
What coin has an eagle on it?
What coin has FDR on it?
What coin has Monticello on it?

What coin has the Lincoln memorial on it?

What coin is a fourth of a dollar?
3. The students will participate in a practice round of the "Money Grab Bag Graph" while I complete it. I will graph my coins
 

D. Independent Practice-

1. The students will complete the "Money Grab Bag Graph".
 

E. Accommodations (Differentiated Instruction)-

1. Those who are struggling can work on this in a small group at the back table while I help them.
 

F. Checking for understanding-

1. Completion of the worksheet correctly.

G. Closure-

1. Ask someone to summarize information about each coin
2. Everyone needs to close their eyes. Give me a "3" if you understand the concept and could teach it to someone else.
