Things in our world come in different sizes and sometimes change in size.
 
3. Goals: Aims/Outcomes-
1.Students will increase awareness of how things in their environment change in size.
2. Students will understand what causes these changes.
 
4. Objectives-
Students will illustrate how things in their environment can change size.
 
5. Materials and Aids-
1. Crayons or colored pencils
2. Large construction paper
3. Pencils
4. Paper for taking notes
 
6. Procedures/Methods-

A. Introduction-

1. Have a student come to the front of the room to stand next to teacher.
2. Ask students what the difference is between student and teacher.
3. Guide them and stop when they realize the teacher is big and the student is small.
4. Ask the question: But did the teacher start out big? Or was she small like you?
5. Discuss how these changes occur.
6. Discuss other items that are big and small.
 

B. Development-

1.Explain that students will be illustrating their own book on how things change from big to small!
2.First, they must brainstorm ideas. Explain brainstorming and model some examples such as a flower getting bigger when it opens its petals or a puppy getting bigger as it turns into a dog.
3.Then model the illustration activity using the puppy example.
4. Fold the construction paper twice to make four sections.
5. Begin by drawing the puppy in the first section.
6. Make the puppy bigger in each consecutive section until the puppy is a dog.
7. Show students the completed project.
 

C. Practice-

1. Students break into groups of five.
2. Students begin brainstorming lists of things that grow from small to big or big to small.
3. Teacher circles and offers suggestions.
 

D. Independent Practice-

1. Students begin working on illustration.
2. Students label each section with the appropriate word: Big or small.
 

E. Accommodations (Differentiated Instruction)-

1. Students work in groups to assist each other.
 

F. Checking for understanding-

1. Teacher makes sure students know which objects start out small and get big and which objects start out big and get small.
 

G. Closure-

1. Students share their pieces with the class.
