To describe how to understand the basic rhythm values to the students.
 
3. Goals: Aims/Outcomes-
1. For students to understand notes and rests values
2. For students to recognize that rests and notes are in the same family, but have different functions
3. For students to be able to read and clap rhythms
 
4. Objectives-
1. To confidently write out a rhythm the teacher asks them to
2. To feel comfortable with singing as well as clapping the rhythms
3. To sing rhythms confidently by themselves
 
5. Materials and Aids-
A recording of a song for them to listen to and find the rhythm and beat.
 
6. Procedures/Methods-

A. Introduction-

1. What is rhythm?
2. What are different types of rhythms?
3. How do they relate
 

B. Development-

1. Write out the basic rhythms on the white board
- quarter rest, quarter note, dotted quarter rest, dotted quarter note, dotted half note, half rest, half note, quarter note, quarter rest.
2. Explain the relevance of the rests and notes and that they share a family.
3. Draw a rhythm tree to show how the notes and rhythms correspond
 

C. Practice-

1. Draw out a staff and rhythms that we are discussing in class on it
2. Divide the class in two parts to create two teams to compete against each other. Whichever student can come to the board to write out the name of rhythms the fastest wins.
3. Have a handout for students to practice drilling rhythms while you monitor them
 

D. Independent Practice-

1. Assign a take home worksheet for rhythm
2. Have them look recording of song to practice hearing and clapping rhythms
3. Have them clap and say the rhythms that were on their worksheet
 

E. Checking for understanding-

1. Pick randomly a student to name of a rhythm and what family it is from
2. Have another student clap a rhythm line for the class
3. Ask questions to the students about what you just taught
 

F. Closure-

1. Ask if they have any questions for me
2. Repeat the assignment for homework
 
7. Evaluation-
1. Watch their behavior/ body language
2. Pay attention to questions and response to teaching
