4. Objectives-
|
1. Students will be able to find the letter Z in various children's
picture books.
2. Students will be able to circle the letter Z on chart paper amongst
several other letters.
3. Students will be able to identify the sound Z makes by singing
the letter chant for Z. |

5. Materials and Aids-
|
The Accidental Zucchini: An Unexpected Alphabet
Chart paper with letters written on it
Crayon

6. Procedures/Methods-
|
A. Introduction-
1. The teacher will review letters previously learned by using tactile
letter cards.
2. The teacher will hold up each card and invite students to sing
the letter chant for that letter.
3. The teacher will tell children that today they will learn about
the letter Z. |
|
|
B. Development-
1. The teacher will introduce the book, The Accidental Zucchini:
An Unexpected Alphabet.
2. The teacher will check for letter recognition during the story
read.
3. The teacher will frequently ask questions during the story read. |
|
|
C. Practice-
1. The teacher will introduce the large chart paper filled with
various letters.
2. The teacher will explain that the students should look for the
letter Z on the chart paper.
3. The teacher will circle the letter Z on the top of the page with
a crayon, to show children how they will use the crayon to circle
the other Z's on the paper.
4. The teacher will allow several students to come up one at a time,
to circle the letter Z.
5. As students come up, the teacher will ask questions such as, "Is
that an uppercase Z?", "How do you know that is a lowercase z?", and
"Do you remember what sound z makes?" |

D. Independent Practice-
1. The teacher will encourage children to pick a book from the basket
and look through the pages to find the letter Z.
2. The teacher will ask children to bring the book to the teacher
when they find Z.

E. Accommodations (Differentiated Instruction)-
1. The Z sound chant will be used with hand motions to accommodate
the learning needs of all students.
2. Teacher modeling will be used to show students how to find and
circle the letter Z on chart paper.
3. Teacher modeling will be used to show students how to search through
books to find Z.
4. The bilingual Assistant Teacher will sit nearby DLLs to translate
on an as needed basis during the story read. |

F. Checking for understanding-
1. Informal teacher observation will be used to determine if students
can identify uppercase and lowercase Z.
2. Informal teacher observation will be used to determine is students
can identify the sound Z makes.
2. The chart paper will letters will be used to determine if individual
students can identify uppercase and lowercase Z. |

G. Closure-
1. The teacher will sing the letter Z sound chant.
2. The teacher will tell children that The Accidental Zucchini: An
Unexpected Alphabet will be available throughout the week for students
to explore. |

7. Evaluation-
|
1. After the lesson, teachers and students will go on a letter Z
"hunt" around the school to search for Z.
2. Teachers will play an alphabet matching game with various letters,
including Z to assess identification of Z. |
