3. Each student will identify the vowel combination determining the vowel that "is not silent" and the one that "is silent".

5. Materials and Aids-
1 Foam Ball
1 Phonics Rule Worksheet from www.busyteacherscafe.com
12 Ziplock bags for manipulatives with word "boat" in the bag.

Reference websites:
www.starfall.com

For differentiated instruction, I would use www.starfall.com first then the activities.

6. Procedures/Methods-

A. Introduction-

1. I need everyone to come to the floor into a circle. 2."This past week, we have been discussing vowels.
3. Let's review over the vowels again: a, e, I, o , and u.
4. Today, we are going to combine these vowels together into words like "boat" .
5. We are going to learn a new phonics song and rule that may help us to learn our vowel combinations. The first vowel usually is the one that we hear. It is called the vowel that "is not silent". It usually is the sound you hear. It is like the vowel is talking out loud. The other vowel is not talking " or " silent". Imagine you are a vowel walking with your friend who is a vowel. One talks while the other vowel does not talk. Let's learn a phonics rule song "When two vowels go a walking, the first one does the talking".

B. Development-

1. I will hold up a word card with the word "boat" on it. Do you notice the "oa" vowel combination in "boat". The "o is the vowel that you will hear. It is "talking". The "a is the vowel you don't hear. It is "silent"

C. Practice-

1. Let's pass the ball around the circle. Each person will say the vowel combination in boat. The vowel combination is "oa" Then, you will say the word "boat" after you say the vowel combination.
2. Now that we have said the vowel combination, let's go around the circle and say the phonics rule. I will say it first. Then, you will say each word . Finally, we will say it all together singing the phonics rule song "When two vowels go a walking, the first one does the talking."

D. Independent Practice-

1.Place the letters in the correct order.
2. Name two of the vowel combinations.
3. Name what vowel is "silent" and the one vowel that "is not silent".
4. Name the vowel that "does the talking".

E. Accommodations (Differentiated Instruction)-

1. The letter pattern will be larger letters for those students who need them.
2. The letter pattern is shown for the student to place the letters on.
3. The students will watch a video clip on www.starfall.com which shows two vowels that go walking.
4. I am using manipulatives for kinesthetic learners, phonics cards with pictures for visual learners, and singing the phonics song for auditory learners. For a longer lesson plan time, I would use www.starfall.com while students watch the "vowel combination" video "When two vowels go walking".

F. Checking for understanding-

1.The assessment is informal as I listen to the students in the circle identify the vowel combinations, sound the word out, and identify the silent and not silent vowel.

G. Closure-

1. Lets sing the phonics rule song.
2. Tomorrow, we will learn a new vowel combination "ea" as in "eat".

7. Evaluation-
1. Chart each student by name on an assessment sheet.

1. Identify "oa" as a vowel combination.
2. Sound out vowel combination "oa.
3. Identify "which letter makes the {talking sound}."
4. Identify the {silent letter} in
the "oa" combination.
