Comparing Children's Stories in Two Different Languages
 
2. Content-
Students will watch and compare two videos in ASL and English Language.
 
3. Goals: Aims/Outcomes-
1. Students will learn about Deaf Culture focusing on story telling.
2. Students will understand differences between story telling in English versus storytelling in ASL.
3. Students will learn differences and similarities with the structure involved in producing both languages.
 
4. Objectives-
1. Students will demonstrate receptive skills as they watch the target language.
2. Students will be able to distinguish different structures, when comparing two different languages.
3. Students will be able to identify cultural differences and similarities between the ASL and English language.
 
5. Materials and Aids-
Lap Top or DVD player
Videos of children's stories in ASL and English
 
6. Procedures/Methods-

A. Introduction-

1. Introduce topic
2. Why do we use stories in school?
3. Show both stories
 

B. Development-

1. Introduce the topic of Culture and Stories and explain there are different ways people express themselves.
2. Explain the use of a Venn Diagram and how the students will use it after watching the stories.
3. Show the different stories in ASL and English.
 

C. Practice-

1. Students will watch a story in English and ASL.
2. Students will write down the differences and similarities they have observed in after watching both videos.
3. Students will take turns sharing what they have observed.
 

D. Independent Practice-

1. Students will be assigned homework to compare and contrast a topic of his or her choice using a Venn Diagram, comparing the Culture of ASL with another.
2. Students will share what they have found with students on the next day of class.
 

E. Accommodations (Differentiated Instruction)-

Use closed captioning for Deaf students.
 

F. Checking for understanding-

Discuss the outcomes of the students data.
 

G. Closure-

1. Make sure students cover all similarities and differences of the two cultures.
2. Assign Homework.
3. Have a time for questions
 
7. Evaluation-
Check homework, making sure students understand the concept of Culture differences and what they entail
