What is the celebration of The Day of the Dead?
 
3. Goals: Aims/Outcomes-
1. The students will interact with the Mexican holiday Day of the Dead.
2.The students will understand the importance of this holiday within Mexican culture.
3.The students will show a comparison between Day of the Dead and the American Halloween tradition.
 
4. Objectives-

Standard 2.2: Students demonstrate an understanding of the relationship between the products and perspectives of the culture studied
 
5. Materials and Aids-
Old magazines that the students will be able to cut pictures out of and art supplies
 
6. Procedures/Methods-

A. Introduction-

1. The history of Dia de los Muertos will be introduced to the students.
2. Students will think of a family member of friend that has passed away and create a list of three things that represent them.
3. They will then cut out picture of the old magazines and make a collage that would be like the alter that is created during Dia de los Muertos.
 

B. Independent Practice-

1. The students will have write a paragraph in English explaining how the items on their collage represent who they chose.
 

C. Accommodations (Differentiated Instruction)-

To accommodate all students learning needs I will have a handout that explains what we will be doing today. We will also review it and students will take turns reading the handout aloud.
 

D. Checking for understanding-

The following day I will do a follow up and have students recap what we did the day before in class. They will discuss the comparison between Dia de los Muertos and Halloween. We will review the history of Dia de los Muertos and how it reflects on Mexican culture and religion.
