PEN, BOOK. |

B. Development-
1. Explain 2 types of verbs in ASL that can describe people, objects,
or spatial location.
Indicating Verbs (Directional).
Depicting Verbs.
Let's start with indicating verbs, the examples are:
YOU-GIVE-ME.
(woman) SHE-GIVE-YOU.
YOU-GIVE-HER (woman).
YOU-SHOW-ME.
(man) HE-SHOW-YOU.
2. Explain two-subtypes of indicating verbs: Reciprocating verbs and
locative verbs.
Reciprocating Verbs:
Examples: LOOK-AT-EACH-OTHER and UNDERSTAND-EACH-OTHER.
Locative verbs: describe the actual direction or location of the sign
that contain specific meanings. Let's say you threw a ball in that
direction. How do you say that in English language? Now, compare that
to ASL. ASL will tell you exactly where the ball went in a certain
direction. Example: I-THROW-BALL (in a certain direction).
3. Explain 3 types of depicting verbs.
A. first type - to show something is in space. Example: location of
the vehicle.
B. second type - what something looks like, how it is shaped or how
objects are arranged. Example: FLAT-SURFACE-EXTEND-UPWARD, 1-inch
diameter tube, a large cylinder.
C. third type - shows movement or action. Example: VEHICLE-DRIVE-TO,
VEHICLE-WIND-DRIVE-TO, DRINK-TEACUP, OPEN-DOOR-WITH-KEY. |
|
|
C. Practice-
1. Divide the class in groups, approx. 3 or 4 in each group.
2. Teacher gives each group a handout listing of 3 or 4 verb-related
sentences.
WHERE-BALL? SHE-GIVE-HIM BALL.
YOU HAVE BOOK? I-GIVE-YOU BOOK.
WHERE PEN? I-THROW-PEN. |
