Figures of Speech Practice
 
2. Content-
What are the figures of speech? How do we use the figures of speech? How many figures of speech are there? Key Vocabulary: Noun, verb, adjective, past-tense, present-tense.
 
3. Goals: Aims/Outcomes-
1.Knowledge of vocabulary terms
2.Understand vocabulary
3.Know at least 5 different verbs,nouns, and adjectives
 
4. Objectives-
1.The students will be able to understand what figures of speech are.
2.The students will know how to use figures of speech.
3.The students will be able to demonstrate verbs.
 
5. Materials and Aids-
Student journals* pencils* paper*
 
6. Procedures/Methods-

A. Introduction-

1.First the teacher will write the vocabulary terms for the day on the board.
2.Then after begin to snap her fingers, and ask the class "what am I doing?".
3.Once the class has given the correct answer of snapping, the teacher will then introduce the subject they will learn which is figures of speech.
 

B. Development-

1.The teacher will explain to the class the figures of speech they will be learning about. Then will describe to the class what each is.
2.The teacher will demonstrate an adjective, a verb, and a noun.
3.Then the teacher will explain and demonstrate to the class past and present tense through her actions.
 

C. Practice-

1.The class will all get up and go to the mat at the front of the room, and at this point the teacher will begin the "action" song.
2.The teacher will randomly chose a student to give the class a verb, once the verb is chosen the class will perform that action ("we're running we're running")
3.The students will continue this until they understand what present tense verbs are. Then the teacher will describe past tense verbs in the same manner ("we ran, we ran")
 

D. Independent Practice-

1.The students will go back to their desks where they will write in their journal the vocabulary words and their definitions.
2.Then on a loose leaf paper the students will write 5 of each figures of speech down to turn in.
3.The teacher will then randomly chose students to share what they have learned so far.
 

E. Accommodations (Differentiated Instruction)-

1.For those students who are unable to jump or do physical activities they will color pictures of demonstrations that describe the figures of speech.
2.If students do not understand how past and present tense works they will be able to ask another student at their table because the seating is a mixture of ability levels.
3.As the lesson plan goes throughout the given time period the teacher will write down the main concepts to the lesson so that the are visible to reflect on and go back to.
 

F. Checking for understanding-

1.The teacher will be walking around the room as the students do their individual work, making sure the class discussions are getting the concept correct.
2.The teacher will read the students loose leaf sheet they turned in consisting of the figures of speech examples. If any students got some mixed up she will address the issue with the student and direct them into the right path of thinking.
3.Ticket to leave the class at the end of the day chosen from any figure of speech and example of one.
 

G. Closure-

1.The students will have a short class discussion with the teacher about what they learned today.
2.The teacher will hand out homework worksheets to take home and study.
 
7. Evaluation-
1.The teacher will read the class journals and/or drawings of today's concepts to ensure the entire class has a good understanding of what the figures of speech are.
2.When overlooking the loose leaf sheets the students turned in the teacher will examine the students vocabulary terms to make sure it is evident they understand the difference between past and present tense.
 
8. Teacher Reflection-
The teacher will have properly demonstrated the figures of speech and how to use them. Throughout the day the teacher will ensure all learning preferences are able to grasp the concept of the figures of speech. When the students walk out the door to leave home the teacher will ensure their students leave with an understanding of how to use present and past tense words.
