Comma Usage/ Daily Edit/ Literature Circles and Characterization Activity
 
3. Goals: Aims/Outcomes-
1. The student will edit writing for correct grammar, capitalization, punctuation, spelling, and sentence structure. Learning Comma Usage "FANBOY FAKERS"

3.The student will read and demonstrate comprehension of a variety of fiction, narrative nonfiction, and poetry.
a) Identify the elements of narrative structure, including setting, character, plot, conflict, and theme. Characterization of Main Character in Fever 1793.
 
4. Objectives-
1. TSW learn the application of commas using conjunctive adverbs.
2. TSW edit for correct punctuation, spelling, grammar, etc. in a given paragraph.
3. TSW compare & contrast the character of Maddie (main) in Fever 1793 using WORDLE (technology) as a medium.
 
5. Materials and Aids-
1. Note Handout; Power Point for Note Taking; Handout for Practice 2.Daily Edit Work Books; Handouts with Answer Key; Graphic Organizer 3. Laptops; WORDLE WEBSITE; Fever 1793 Novel; Graphic Organizer
 
6. Procedures/Methods-

A. Introduction-

1. Commas Power Point
2. Daily Edit Read Paragraph and Discuss Possible Errors
3. Take out previously completed graphic organizer of Maddie's Characterization.
 

B. Development-

1. TTW present the Commas Power Point as the students fill in the cloze notes copy in their notebooks.
2. TTW project the paragraph on the screen and read through the paragraph pointing out possible things to look for. The number of mistakes will be noted.
3. TTW do quick model of the WORDLE activity by completing one and projecting it on the screen.
 

C. Practice-

1. Students will complete the practice handout.
2. Students will individually correct the paragraph. Students will pair up (shoulder partner) & compare plus check w/ the provided handout (key). Students will in groups of 4 or 5 (tables) list common errors. There will be a class discussion.
3. Students will use their graphic organizers to complete 2 WORDLES about the main character in the novel. The first will represent Maddie at the beginning of the novel. The second will represent her at the end.
 

D. Independent Practice-

1. Future Practice w/ same concept later in the week
2. Daily Paragraph Edits w/ same Concepts
3. Continued Characterization Activities throughout the year

G. Closure-

1. Check Practice Handout
2. Class Discussion of Common Errors
3. Print WORDLES for presentations next class.
