Begin greetings and the first word in the closing with a capital letter, comma and colon usage
 
3. Goals: Aims/Outcomes-
1. Students will learn how to look for correct capitalization and punctuation in letters

2. Students will learn how and when to use proper capitalization and punctuation in letters

3. Students will be able to write a letter correctly
 
4. Objectives-
1. Students will learn to use commas and colons in business and informal letters

2. Students will learn how to piece parts of a business letter together in the correct order

3. Students will learn the importance of correct capitalization and punctuation use in a letter
 
5. Materials and Aids-
Textbooks, Sample business letters, worksheets
 
6. Procedures/Methods-

A. Introduction-

1. I will begin by asking students if they have ever written a letter before. If they answer yes, I will ask if there is anything special they have to pay attention to when writing a letter. If they answer no, I will begin by explaining the different parts of a letter
 

B. Development-

1. As a class, we will go over the various parts of a letter: The Greeting, Body, Closing, and Signature. If it is a business letter, it will also include a Heading and Address

 

C. Practice-

1. Students will look at the punctuation and capitalization in the sample letter from their textbook. Students will look at the letter and identify the errors

2. As as class, we will engage in a discussion about the rules of comma, colon, and capital letter usage.
 

D. Independent Practice-

1. I will divide students in groups pf two

2. Each group will be given strips of paper with words or sentences on them. The strips of paper form a letter and students will work together to piece them together. The strips will also contain various punctuation and capitalization mistakes and students will correct them as they go

3. As groups finished, I will walk around to see if they are correct
 

F. Checking for understanding-

1. I will check for understanding throughout the lesson by student participation and discussion

2. I will know if students understand through the group work based on whether or not their answers are correct
 

G. Closure-

1.I will ask students to write me a letter and tell me two interesting facts about themselves

2. This will not only give me the chance to check for proper punctuation and capitalization, but it will also give me the chance to get to know them better
 
7. Evaluation-
1. Students will be informally evaluate throughout the lesson on their participation

2. They will be informally evaluated on their group work and the letter they have written to me
