Writing to Explain (a natural disaster):
-What it means to explain (tell how something works)
-format of writing (name, date, title, description of parts or elements in the process, the process (how it works), the application (of the object or process)
 
3. Goals: Aims/Outcomes-
1.Finish a handwritten final draft of B/D/A procedures on lined paper.
2.Introduce 'writing to explain' with a model about avalanches.
3.Students choose which disaster to explain (encourage one they have already been researching)
 
4. Objectives-
1. SWBAT finalize BDA procedural lists on lined paper, including all necessary written components (Neat handwriting,format, sensible order, summarized points and not lengthy writing, needs, grammar, punctuation, facts)
2. SWBAT understand the expectations and subject matter of the upcoming exercise on writing to explain, after viewing and listening to my written sample and after class discussion.
3.SWBAT decide which disaster they would like to explain in writing. If there is time they may begin drafting.
 
5. Materials and Aids-
Computer, OHP, white board, written samples of procedures and writing to explain, student notes, blank paper, research books, computers...
 
6. Procedures/Methods-

A. Introduction-

1.Carpet:discuss student notes and readiness to move on to next step.
 

B. Development-

1.Model and explain next step (final draft of BDA procedures) using overhead projector and typed example of BDA for tornados)
2.Point out/Reiterate need for:
-Imperative/Bossy verbs
-Correct format on page (name, date, title, bullet points, capital letters, punctuation, spelling, clearly stated, summarized steps, needs included, sensible order of steps so that it makes sense)
 

C. Practice-

1.Students go back to desk to work on final editing and drafts. (have not decided to use computers to type or large white paper to hand write, or lined paper)
 

D. Independent Practice-

1.Continue to write final draft
2.Conference and discuss with me and discuss with peers
 

F. Checking for understanding-

1.Discussions/questions answers
 

G. Closure-

1.back to carpet, share progress and assess need to work further or not
2.Post final drafts in room
