Locate the index.
index is a list of topics with page numbers. An index is found at
the back of the book. It lists many words from the book and the pages
where you will find the words. |

3. Goals: Aims/Outcomes-
|
SWBAT find where the index is located.
a glossary It tells what the words mean in that textbook. It also
tells how to pronounce each word.

|
4. Objectives-
|
Use a Non-Fiction book to locate the glossary (vocabulary word definitions)
and the index (page number) on a topic. |

|
5. Materials and Aids-
|
Non-Fiction Big Book "What do Animals Eat?"
Non fiction books + book baggies at each area for independent reading |

6. Procedures/Methods-
|
A. Introduction-
When you want to look up what a word means, where do you look in
the book?
You check the glossary.
When you want to find where the word shows up in the main text, you
check the index.

|
|
B. Development-
Model: "I wonder what the word "x" means? Where do I look?
I go to the glossary.
Where is it found? At the front of the book? (look there. No.)
Let's look at the back of the book. There it is. Glossary. Spell it.
Clap it. Say it. Glossary.
The word is "x" and that word begins with "x" so let's look it up.
It's like a dictionary in abc order.
There it is. An "x" means .... So the glossary lists special words
from this book and tells me what they mean. It also tells me how to
say the word.

C. Practice-
A glossary is usually found at the end of a book. Now it's your
turn. Who can find the glossary in your books. Not every book will
have a glossary. Where do we look? (At the back of the book.)
Find a word and point to it.
What does it begin with?
Can you guess the animal word? |

D. Independent Practice-
Small groups. Continue looking for the glossary in your book.
|
|
|
E. Accommodations (Differentiated Instruction)-
Talk and turn to small group members to help one another locate
some glossary words.
(Conferencing with individuals at this time.) |

|
F. Checking for understanding-
Shared reading. Ask who found the index and the page number.
Go around and ask each group to find a specific word in the book and
tell the page number. |

|
G. Closure-
To review, an index is found at the back of the book.
It lists many words from the book and the pages where you will find
the words. |

7. Evaluation-
|
Repeat each day and ask where the following word is in the index
and what page it is on. |
