Informational text (news articles) that are written in varied levels
of student reading abilities. Content can vary from day to day. Teacher
can assign article or allow student to choose. |

4. Objectives-
|
Students will read Lexile leveled informational text (news articles)
Students will discuss key ideas of the articles in cooperative groups.
Students will take a quiz to check for understanding.

5. Materials and Aids-
|
Computers or iPads and access to Internet to connect with the Newsela
website. Overhead projector. Paper and pencils for note taking if
needed. |

6. Procedures/Methods-
|
A. Introduction-
Finding informational text for the many varied levels of student
reading abilities in any classroom can be a challenge. Newsela is
a free website that allows teachers to track student progress in grades
3-12 providing news articles from reputable sources in varied Lexile
levels. Newsela articles are also aligned with Common Core Standards
and provide a leveled comprehension quiz with each article. Common
Core Standards are provided with each informational text article as
well. Articles vary in content area as well. Topics include Science,
Kids, Money, Law, Health, Arts, and War and Peace. |

B. Development-
After browsing articles, teacher will assign leveled article for
class to read and assign cooperative discussion groups. Students will
access assigned article by going into an individual binder set up
on Newsela class website. |

|
C. Practice-
Teacher will read a sample article out loud using overhead projector.
Teacher will lead whole class discussion modeling appropriate questions
for cooperative groups to use as prompts. The class will go through
comprehension quiz and volunteer answers. |

D. Independent Practice-
Students will read assigned news article independently. Students
will discuss key ideas of article in cooperative group. Groups will
share key ideas of article with class. Students will take a 4 question
online comprehension quiz provided with each Newsela article. |

E. Accommodations (Differentiated Instruction)-
Newsela news articles are written in varied Lexile levels ranging
from 700L (3rd grade) to above 1200L (12th grade). The articles vary
in complexity and length. Having the articles available online, allows
students to adjust text size if necessary . Collaborative group discussions
before taking quiz will help students identify key ideas. This is
an ideal way to differentiate for all levels of readers, whether they
are way below grade level or are highly advanced. |

F. Checking for understanding-
Students will take a 4 question quiz to check for comprehension
of informational text. |
|
|
G. Closure-
Each group will share key ideas from Newsela article with class. |
|
|
7. Evaluation-
|
Each student will take a 4 question comprehension quiz after each
article read. Teacher can assess whether Lexile level of article is
appropriate for student and suggest modifications if necessary. |
|
|
8. Teacher Reflection-
|
After lesson teacher can determine whether students are better served
by assigning articles and Lexile levels or allowing students to determine
their own Lexile levels. |
