4. Beliefs - clashes between what you want to believe, should believe and have to believe.
5. Freedom - notions of freedom and independence
6. Cultural beliefs - things which influence and underpin cultural beliefs and expressions.

1. Discussion and brainstorming to identify ideas and evidence.
2. Relating these ideas to their personal lives.
3. Written explanation of their understanding using the brainstorms to inform their writing.

6. Procedures/Methods-

A. Introduction-

1. Introduce the topic
2. Identify the goals and objectives to the class verbally.
3. Provide the supporting handout.
 

B. Development-

1. Class discussion
2. Start a brainstorm
3. Offer some suggestions for relating the story to their personal lives.
 

C. Practice-

1. In groups they continue with the brainstorm from the whiteboard
2. Identify areas that might relate to their personal lives
3. Draft a piece of writing which demonstrates your understanding of the goals 1-6.
 

D. Independent Practice-

1. Brainstorm
2. Ideas relating to their personal lives
3. Writing draft
 

E. Accommodations (Differentiated Instruction)-

1. Draw lines to ideas that explain each of the goals.
2. Think about where your family have come from. What did your Grandfather do as a job? Where did your Grandfather live?
3. Write down what you think each of the goals means for Jamal and his family and what they might mean to yours.
 

F. Checking for understanding-

1. Relating directly to the goals
2. Relating to aspects of the book and their personal lives
